Pete, I promise. I won\u2019t tell anyone. (to herself) Bye. He is so strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley: Hey, Anna!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Hi, Ashley!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley: Are you talking to yourself again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: No, not this time. I was talking to Pete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley: How\u2019s he doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Good. He has a birthday coming up! But he told me not to tell anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley: Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Well, from the way he was speaking, I don\u2019t think he likes cake or presents or fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley: That sounds like Pete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Well, I don\u2019t care. I\u2019m getting him a present. Do you know where I can buy something unique?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley: I do &#8212; Tanglewood Works. You will definitely find something unique there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Great. I\u2019ll go this weekend. Now, speaking of Pete\u2019s birthday, what else should I do? I know. I\u2019ll rent him a clown!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley: Yeah, he\u2019ll never speak to you again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Bot: Did you hear Ashley and Anna using the words talk and speak?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk and speak both mean \u201cto say words.\u201d And, many times, you can use either word without losing any meaning. But there are some differences in when we use these words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word talk is usually used:<br>for conversations between two or more people<br>and informal situations, such as between friends or family<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Ashley asks Anna: \u201cAre you talking to yourself again?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speak is usually used:<br>for one-way communication, such as presentations<br>formal situations, such as a boss speaking with her workers<br>to talk about language ability<br>and in polite requests<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep watching, and listen for the words talk and speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Anna goes to Tanglewood Works.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: Hey there. Welcome to Tanglewood Works! I\u2019m Sue. How can I help you today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Hi Sue, I\u2019m Anna. A friend told me about your store. She said, \u201cAnna, this place is really unique!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: We are! Here at Tanglewood Works, we focus on things that are handmade, reclaimed and recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Wow! That is really good for the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: It\u2019s good for you too. Local artists made all of these one-of-a-kind pieces. And I paint most of the furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Can I look around?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: Oh, please do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Anna walks around the store.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: So, Anna, do you like to make things?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Me? Oh, no. Every time I try to make something, something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(She knocks down many things.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Oh, sorry. Sorry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: It\u2019s okay. Anna, everybody can make something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Sue, this piece is very interesting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: You know, when I found these pieces, they were broken and in a dumpster. But they spoke to me. And they said, \u201cSave me, Sue! Save me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Sue, what do you mean they \u201cspoke\u201d to you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: When I see something special that someone has thrown away, I can almost hear it talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: It\u2019s not saying anything!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: Anna, it\u2019s not easy to see the treasure in trash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Or hear it talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: But you can learn. In fact, I teach private classes. And one is called Turning Trash to Treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue: Next week, bring in some trash and we\u2019ll turn it into treasure. Just remember \u2013 pick some trash that \u201cspeaks\u201d to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna: Got it! I\u2019ll see you next week!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Bot: Will Anna find trash that \u201cspeaks\u201d to her? What will it say?
