WEAVER: Oh, Anna. I\u2019ve invited some people to dinner Saturday. We\u2019re going to that new seafood restaurant &#8212; Fish on a Dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MS. WEAVER: Why don\u2019t you join us? My treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Thanks, Ms. Weaver. But I already have plans. My friend has invited me to her houseboat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MS. WEAVER: Houseboat, really? That\u2019s unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Yes, it is. In fact, I\u2019m thinking of living on a houseboat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MS. WEAVER: Aren\u2019t you too tall and klutzy to live on a houseboat?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: I am not too tall!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(She knocks over a display board.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PROF. BOT VO: Is Anna really ready for a houseboat?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PROF. BOT: Ms. Weaver invited Anna to dinner. When we make friendly, informal invitations, we use phrases like \u201cWhy don\u2019t\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PROF. BOT: For example, Ms. Weaver said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you join us? My treat!\u201d That\u2019s: Why don\u2019t plus the subject plus the simple form of the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PROF. BOT: Anna responded to the invitation by saying, \u201cThanks, but I already have plans.\u201d Keep watching for more examples of informal invitations!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: Anna, I\u2019m so glad you could come!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Hi, Fanny!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: Hi, this is my son, Phoenix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Hi, Phoenix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: How about you give Anna a tour and I will make some lunch?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: Aye, aye, captain!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: Great!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Do you really call her \u201ccaptain\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: I kind of have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: So, Phoenix, I think I\u2019d like to live on a houseboat. Do you like living here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: I love it! It\u2019s much different than living in a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Oh, I bet. I bet you had to get rid of a lot of stuff, didn\u2019t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: No way! We moved from a 3-story house to a boat! So, we really had to downsize!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: I\u2019d have to get rid of a lot of stuff. I have a rock collection and I have some really big rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Can you stop this boat from rocking for a minute?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: No. We\u2019re floating on water. I can\u2019t do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Well, since you live on the water, aren\u2019t you afraid of great white sharks?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: No, not really. They don\u2019t live in these waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: \u2026 that you know of. What about killer whales?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Electric eels?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Barracudas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Piranhas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX: Uh-uh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: You know, Anna, if you\u2019re afraid of sea life, maybe you shouldn\u2019t live on a houseboat. Do you have any boating experience?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Oh, oh yeah, Fanny. I have battled the great waters before &#8212; once on a swan boat and once in a duck boat \u2026 bus. It was a boat that turned into a bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: Yeah, I don\u2019t think that counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Fanny, does this rocking ever bother you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: No, I love it. It goes up and down and side to side and up and down. Anna, I love it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Because of the rocking, Anna begins to feel seasick.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: Anna, are you feeling okay?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Yeah, yeah. You know, I just need some fresh air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: Let me open a window for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: No, I need some fresh land air. I mean, I need to breathe air on land. Oh, is that the time? I should really be going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Thanks for lunch, Fanny, and a tour of your houseboat. It\u2019s given me a great idea!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FANNY: You\u2019re going to live on a houseboat?<br>ANNA: Sort of. Thanks again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Hi! How would you like to hang out on my boat? Great! See you then!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Ms. Weaver and Anna sit in a boat on land.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: \u2026and this is my shark net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MS. WEAVER: Thank you for the invitation, Anna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANNA: Of course, would you like more orange juice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MS.
