The European Union and the International Monetary Fund put up nearly $1 trillion Monday to contain a debt crisis and stabilize the euro currency.

The rescue package, endorsed early Monday by EU finance ministers, sparked a surge in European and U.S. stock prices after last week's losses. At midday Monday, London and Frankfurt share prices were up more than 4 percent while French stocks climbed more than 8 percent. U.S. stocks also opened higher, with share prices up at least 3 percent in early trading.
