China's yuan exchange rate hit a 5-year high Monday after Beijing pledged to make its currency more flexible.

中国人民币的汇率星期一上升到五年来的新高，在此之前，北京承诺让人民币汇率有更大的弹性。

The yuan rose to about 6.8 to the dollar, up nearly four-tenths of a percent from Friday's close. A half-percent limit on the currency's daily range would prevent much larger movements in its value.

In response, key stock market indexes in Asia, Europe and the United States made strong gains. Crude oil and copper prices also rose as investors bet the stronger Chinese currency would boost imports of some commodities.

亚洲、欧洲和美国的主要股票市场指数都应声强劲上扬。原油和铜的价格也上涨，投资者认为人民币升值将会提高部分商品的进口。

U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman said the change "takes an irritant off the table" in relations between Washington and Beijing. The Chinese government has come under increasing pressure from the United States, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to allow the yuan to appreciate in value.

美国驻中国大使洪博培说，中方在人民币汇率问题上的改变把一个棘手的问题从华盛顿和北京之间关系的台面上拿了下来。中国政府受到越来越大的来自美国、欧洲联盟和国际货币基金组织的压力，要求中国允许人民币升值。
