CHICAGO (Reuters) - Basketball superstar Michael Jordan's wife of 12 years, Juanita, has filed for divorce, the Chicago Tribune reported in Tuesday's editions.

The newspaper said she filed a petition last week in Lake County Circuit Court, located north of Chicago where the couple maintains a home in the town of Highland Park.

Mrs. Jordan, 42, cited ``irreconcilable differences'' with Jordan, 38, the former Chicago Bulls star who now plays with and has a stake in the Washington Wizards.

The newspaper also said she was seeking permanent custody of the couple's three children, their 25,000-square-foot home and half of the couple's property.

The newspaper quoted her lawyer as saying Monday that the Jordans ``hope that the media respect the family's need and desire for privacy in this painful matter.''

The Jordans were married in 1989 in Las Vegas.

Jordan earned more than $30 million in his final season with the Bulls and earns millions more in product endorsements. He has a reported $50 million stake in the company that controls the Wizards and the National Hockey League's Washington Capitals, the newspaper said.
