A senior Chinese official says China has overtaken Japan to become the world's second largest economy.

Yi Gang, the country's chief currency regulator, made the claim Friday in an interview with China Reform magazine. He said the goal had been reached sooner than expected by the International Monetary Fund, which predicted the benchmark would be reached around the end of this year.
