Russia and Italy on Friday signed an agreement that will allow military material destined for Italian troops deployed in Afghanistan to transit Russian territory.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said the deal was Moscow's contribution to resolving the complicated problems in Afghanistan.

Mr. Medvedev was speaking in the mountain resort town of Krasnaya Polyana where he was hosting Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Russian news agencies said the agreement will allow the transit of both civilian and military cargo, including weapons and ammunition.

Mr. Berlusconi on Friday dismissed those claims, while Mr. Medvedev said the classified cables published on the WikiLeaks site just served to show the cynicism of U.S. foreign policy.
