Australian crews have refloated a huge Chinese coal carrier that ran around on the Great Barrier Reef earlier this month and leaked more than two tons of oil.

Officials refloated 230-meter Shen Neng 1 Monday, after spending several days pumping heavy fuel oil from the vessel that had been stuck on the reef since April 3.

Officials hope to tow the damaged ship to a more sheltered location, ahead of a storm that is expected to bring high winds and heavy seas on Tuesday.

The vessel was carrying at least 950 tons of oil and 65,000 tons of coal when it ran around off the coast of Queensland. The ship's owner, China's Shenzen Energy Transport company, has acknowledged the vessel was off course.

Australian officials said the grounding caused an oil slick about three kilometers long and 100 meters wide.
