Goldman Sachs, the huge financial firm facing fraud charges, says its first-quarter profits nearly doubled from the same period last year and were well above $3 billion.The bank's trading in bonds, commodities and currency bolstered the results.

The strong earnings report comes on the same day that British authorities said they are opening a formal investigation into Goldman's activities.The British probe is in addition to a lawsuit filed by U.S. regulators last Friday alleging that Goldman sold mortgage investments that were intended to fail, but never alerted investors to the potential dangers.Goldman says it will cooperate with British authorities. The firm denies it did anything wrong, and vows to fight the allegations.
