HARRY POTTER isn't just popular, he's the most famous character in the whole of English literature by miles, according to a survey announced yesterday.
When NOP asked 1,000 people of all ages to name the first fictional character that came into their heads, 22 per cent said Harry Potter. It was a good result for the author J K Rowling, even if part of it could be ascribed to the hype for the first Harry Potter film, which receives its premiere tomorrow.
When the pollsters totted up the figures for other characters, the results were enough to make most writers think about finding new jobs.
The next highest were Sherlock Holmes, Oliver Twist, James Bond and Winnie the Pooh, each recording just two per cent. Jane Eyre, Hercule Poirot, Bridget Jones, Captain Corelli and Miss Marple were next at one per cent each.
Some 97 per cent of those polled, on behalf of the booksellers Waterstone's, had heard of Harry Potter. A fifth of the adults polled had read a Harry Potter book, but he was more popular with women (22 per cent) than men (14 per cent).
Waterstone's described the result as "mind blowing".
1:Winnie the Pooh is the name of a bear. Writer A.A.Milne introduced this character into a series of books, which later on became firm favorites with old and young alike and have been translated into almost every known language. it also inspired Disney to bring Pooh to a lot of animated films.
注2:Bridget Jones is the heroine of Helen Fielding’s best-seller “Bridget Jones's Diary”. It was adapted into a film in which Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant starred.
注3:Captain Corelli is a character in a movie named “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”.
注4:Miss Marple is a female character in Agatha Christie’s detective stories.
