A Ugandan gay rights activist who was pictured and named in a newspaper article has been killed at his home, outside the capital, Kampala.

Ugandan police say David Kato was killed Wednesday when an unidentified attacker entered his home and struck him on the head before fleeing. The New York-based Human Rights Watch says he died while on the way to the hospital. Kato was an activist with the group Sexual Minorities Uganda. He was a vocal critic of the country's Anti-Homosexuality bill.

Reports say he had been receiving death threats after Uganda's Rolling Stone newspaper featured him on a list of what the paper called Uganda's 100 "top" homosexuals. The front-page story also featured a bright yellow banner that proclaimed "Hang them." Kato and two other activists sued the newspaper for damages and won.

Homosexuality in Uganda is punishable by life imprisonment. Last year, a member of parliament introduced a bill calling for some homosexual acts to be punishable by death. The bill was condemned by foreign governments and human rights groups, and has yet to come up for a vote.
