Japanese officials say two emergency workers at the country's crippled nuclear plant have been hospitalized with lesions on their legs after exposure to high levels of radiation.

Japan's chief cabinet secretary said Thursday that three workers received high levels of radiation while working to restore cooling pumps at the Fukushima nuclear plant's number 3 reactor, considered the most dangerous of six reactors at the plant because it is fueld, in part, by unstable plutonium.

Yukio Edano said the three men were laying electrical cables in the basement of the reactor building when two of them stepped into contaminated water which splashed into their boots and on their legs. A spokesman for the plant said the two workers were taken to a hospital equipped to deal with radiation cases.

Repair work had resumed at the plant earlier Thursday. Dangerous radiation has been leaking from the reactors since their cooling systems failed during the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11.

National police say 9,800 people have been confirmed dead, as of Thursday. Another 17,500 have been missing since the disaster, and about 300,000 are living in temporary shelters.
