Indian navy officials say they have detained 16 Somali pirates after a confrontation with a hijacked fishing boat in the Arabian Sea. Officials said Monday the navy and coast guard captured the pirates on Sunday near the Lakshadweep islands off India's southwestern coast. The navy also rescued 16 crew members after the pirates fired upon their ship.

The pirates were using a hijacked Iranian fishing boat to attack other ships in the Arabian Sea. Indian officials say they have arrested more than 100 pirates in recent months, as pirates move farther away from operations along the Somali coast.
