The U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in March, while the unemployment rate held steady at a relatively high 9.7 percent. This is the largest gain in jobs since the recession began in 2007, and is the latest sign that the economic recovery is gathering strength.

Friday's report comes from the Labor Department and it says a bit less than one-third of the new jobs are the result of workers hired for the temporary job of conducting the U.S. census. Employment rose in the factory sector, but declined in financial services and the computer industry.
