Republicans also made significant gains in the U.S. Senate, although Democrats held on to a slim majority. One of Mr. Obama's strongest allies, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, was able to survive a strong challenge from Republican Sharron Angle, who was backed by the influential and conservative Tea Party movement.
