China has again raised interest rates in an effort to control economic growth and limit inflationary pressure.

The People's Bank of China raised its main interest rate for loans by a quarter of a percentage point, to 6.06 percent. The basic interest paid on bank deposits increased by a quarter of a point, to 3 percent from 2.75 percent.

中国人民银行把一年期贷款基准利率上调0.25个百分点，达到6.06%。一年期存款基准利率上调0.25个百分点，从2.75%上调到3%。

It was the latest in a series of increases to rates, and the bank surprised some economists by announcing the rate increase on the last day of the Lunar New Year holiday.

China announced last month that the country's economy grew by 10.3 percent last year, and inflation reached a 28-month high in November.
