Dialogue A Jenny is talking to one of her managers, Adam, about a new office policy that she has in mind. Jenny: I've been thinking about the company's image recently. I want to put a dress code into effect for all employees. Adam: What will it include? Jenny: I've noticed some people are wearing jeans and sports shoes. That's a bit too casual for the office. I'd like people to dress in business fashion. Adam: Can you be more specific about the rules? Jenny: Of course. I'll send you the new policy later on so you can inform everyone. Dialogue B Adam is discussing the new policy with Helen, his co-worker. Adam: Bad news. The boss wants to enforce a dress code in the office. Helen: What kind of dress code? Adam: No jeans, sports shoes, shorts, flip-flops, or low-cut tops. Helen: Well, that doesn't sound too bad. That's typical for most offices. Adam: I know, but people tend to dislike dress codes. How do I make it sound like a positive thing? Helen: Just think of the benefits of having a dress code and then point them out. Building Your Vocabulary 1. casual a. T-shirts are a type of casual wear. 2. specific a. Ted will provide specific instructions for you. 3. enforce vt. A new tax law will be enforced next month. 4. typical a. Pizza is a typical food that most kids like. Phrases for Learning 1. put/bring...into effect It is hard to put that complex plan into effect. I am busy now.
