Friends

本栏目是由世博英语Starry_Night原创编写!

Rachel: What the hell is that?!! (to Monica) What the hell is that? Is that you?
Monica: Boy, you are really not a morning person.
Rachel: You back off!!! Get up! Get up! Get up! God damn it! Get up, get up, get up, get up, get up!! What is that noise?
Chandler: You!
Joey: It’s the chick! She’s…going through some changes.
Monica: What kind of changes?
Chandler: Well the vet seems to think that’s she’s becoming a rooster.

Boy, you are really not a morning person. Oh boy—what a surprise!

Back off, Marc! Let me run my own life! Jerry backed off when he realized how much work was involved.

Friends

Emily: You are mad!
Ross: No! No! I’m not! It’s-it’s-it’s perfect! I mean it’s better than you just-just moving here, ‘cause it’s us together forever, and that’s-that’s what I want.
Emily: We’ve only known each other for six weeks!
Ross: Yeah, I know, so what? I mean, who’s-who’s to say? Does that mean we-we can’t do it? Look, huh, I was with Carol for four years before we got married and I wound up divorced from a pregnant lesbian. I mean, this, this makes sense for us. Come on! I mean, on our first date we ended up spending the whole weekend in Vermont! I mean, last night I got my ear pierced! Me! This feels right. Doesn’t it?
Emily: My parents are going to be really mad.
Ross: Is that—are you saying yes? Is that yes?
Emily: Yes.

(Look, huh, I was with Carol for four years before we got married and I wound up divorced from a pregnant lesbian.)。 I mean, this, this makes sense for us. make sense 是个常用的词组,sense作为名词的解释之一就是“意义”,因此 make sense就表示“理解”,“… Read this and tell me if it makes sense. 这个词组还常常以这样的形式出现,it makes sense (for somebody) to do something,如:It makes sense to save money while you can.

(Come on! I mean, on our first date we ended up spending the whole weekend in Vermont!)。

You know you’re going to wind up in court over this.
He came round for a coffee and we ended up in bed together.

make sense
end up / wind up

本栏目是由世博英语Starry_Night原创编写!

Chandler: Doug!!
Doug: Hmm.
Chandler: I’m a little bit uncomfortable with the way that you express yourself.
Doug: Oh, is it the swearing? I mean is it the constant swearing? Because I gotta tell ya, if it is, you can just… kiss my ass!
Chandler: No, no. It-it’s not about the swearing, it’s more about ah, the way, that you ah, occasionally, concentrate, your enthusiasm on my buttocks.
Doug: Oh?
Chandler: Oh, and don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the sentiment. It’s just that I, I have a rather, sensitive posterior, and ah, besides, it’s making all the other guys jealous.
Doug: Well, say no more. Y’know it takes guts to bring this up. Bing! You’re okay.
Chandler: Okay.

(I’m a little bit uncomfortable with the way that you express yourself.),Doug还以为Chandler指的是他的粗口(swearing)呢。 He turned round and swore at me. 如果要表示“发誓做某事”,swear后面可以跟that从句,或者不定式,也就是swear to do sth,例如:

Lisa swore never to return home.
It was a mistake — she swears that she didn’t mean to do it.

Doug对于自己的粗口一点儿也不在意,所以他对Chanlder说:“I mean is it the constant swearing? Because I gotta tell ya, if it is, you can just… kiss my ass! Ted will kiss anybody’s ass if he thinks it’ll get him promoted.

同样是说“屁股”,喜欢说粗口的Doug用的是ass这个词,而Chandler用的却是buttock, 他吞吞吐吐地对Doug说:“No, no. It-it’s not about the swearing, it’s more about ah, the way, that you ah, occasionally, concentrate, your enthusiasm on my buttock.(不,不,这和粗口无关,我说的是你,哦,偶尔对我的屁股特别关照。)”

(Oh, and don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the sentiment. It’s just that I, I have a rather, sensitive posterior, and ah, besides, it’s making all the other guys jealous.) Don’t get me wrong, I love my family, I just don’t want to be with them all the time.

Y’know it takes guts to bring this up. Bing! You’re okay.” No one had the guts to tell Paul what a mistake he was making.

kiss my ass/kiss somebody’s ass
don’t get me wrong
take / have guts to do sth
