笔者有个表弟，眼看就要大学毕业了，他整日向我诉苦说现在要找个工作很难，尤其是学历史的。想来想去也觉得他说得对，不过我觉得再难的事情也要努力去做呀!只有努力过才可能有成功的机会。
The more you leave something to chance, the less chance there is for you.
(译文：越是听天由命，你的机会就越少。)
片语leave something to chance的意思是“等着瞧，看着办，听天由命，做一天和尚撞一天钟”。也写作：Leave things to chance. 你想，把所有的事情(leave things) 寄希望于机会(chance)，这不是听天由命、听其自然又是什么呢？To leave something to chance means not to plan something but just hope that everything will happen as intended. For example:
If anyone in the cabinet is unable to carry out reforms well, I am sorry to advise that they must be replaced. We should not have any idea that we can leave things to chance. There is no guarantee for anyone to stay in office for four years.
(译文：如果内阁阁员不能使改革成功，建议把他们撤职虽然令人难过，但我们不该有任何听天由命的思想。谁也不能保证他们就能在职位中呆上整整四年。)
机会总是垂青于努力奋斗的人们，所以办公室里的其它同事总是努力工作，希望哪天能得到高升。但有些人的看法不同，他们认为许多人得到升迁并不是因为才能的出众和工作的努力。看看下面的一段小对话是如何讨论这个问题的：
A: We must work hard to get a promotion.
B: speak for yourself. Jim, director’s son-in-law, has done nothing!
(译文：
A：我们必须为得到晋升而努力工作。
B：那是你的想法。厂长的女婿Jim什么都没有做呢!)
在这段简短的对话中我们看到一个片语Speak for yourself, 它的意思是“那是你的想法”。这个片语一般用来表达与别人看法不一致的观点。To speak for yourself used to tell someone that you do not have the same opinion as they do, or that something that is true for them is not true for you, for example:
Why do you say we don’t like Iraqis? Speak for yourself. I think they should be respected.
(译文：为什么你说我们不喜欢伊拉克人？那是你的想法，我认为他们应该得到尊敬。)
注意，在第23讲我们曾经学过一个片语：speak up for someone, 意思是“维护某人权益”，同时还知道speak up for oneself是“维护自己利益”的意思。去掉中间的up就变为了speak for oneself, 意思是“那是某人的(你的)想法”。
结束语：朋友们喜欢张艺谋导演的电影《英雄》吗？许多人认为言过其实，不好看。那是你们的想法(speak for yourself), 我倒认为这部电影有许多地方值得肯定的。我喜欢张艺谋，喜欢他与命运作斗争的奋斗精神，喜欢他兢兢业业的敬业精神，喜欢他遇到困难不回避，不听天由命(leave something to chance)的作风。
