Tony: Tina, I think I’ve made Mrs. Sanders very upset.
Tina: What could you have possibly done to her?
Tony: I guess it was what I said to her about the new dress she bought last week.

Tony: Why not? We have known each other for a long time. I thought she’d like my honest opinion. The color is simply…
Tina: Hold on! Hold it there! Don’t tell her everything. You can say you like the style, or she looks much younger in that outfit.

“Wow….Thank you….I’ve always wanted one of these…”

Being able to act is a good skill when opening up presents. In America, it’s customary to open a gift in front of the person who gives it to you. Part of their joy from giving the gift comes from watching the person’s expression as they first realize what the gift is. This can be a very positive experience when you receive something that you love and that is a good match for you and your personality. It’s easy to appear excited and happy when you like your gift, but what happens if you don’t like the gift? Should you be honest and tell the person politely, “The thought was nice, but…” NO! Absolutely not! Always show that you are pleased with the gift- even when you’re not! Pretend you like the ugly sweater! Find something nice to say about everything you receive. It’s very impolite to admit that you don’t like a gift you are given and makes the giver feel very bad.

Tina: Hey, Tony! You got a minute?
Tony: Sure! Is everyone inviting you out for lunch again?
Tina: Oh, no, I’ve passed that stage. I know that’s only a greeting, but why does no one ever opens the gift that I give after dinner?
Tony: Well, opening the gifts in front of the guests is considered impolite.
Tina: Oh? But in America you are supposed to do that. You’ve got to act thrilled when seeing the gift and make positive commends.
Tony: If you do that in China, you are saying, I don’t trust you and let’s check the gifts.
