生活中总有这样的人，他们故意装出难以接近的样子，显得很清高。人们称他们为“酷”，英文用“cool”来表示。但我却不这样认为，我总觉得这样的人是play hard to get. 大家知道这个片语是什么意思吗？get在这里的意思可以理解为“相处”，play hard在这里的意思可以理解为“装作反对，不肯合作”，所以整个片语的意思就是“故意装出不肯合作的样子，故意装出难以接近的样子”。

The girl is playing hard to get. She doesn’t return Luming’s phone calls, but everyone knows that she really likes him.
(译文：这女孩故意装出难以接近的样子，他不回应卢明的电话，但每个人都知道，她真的喜欢他。)

有些人主观上是肯合作或可以接近的，但为了显示自己、加强自己的地位而故作不肯接近的样子，这时我们就可以用play hard to get来描述他们。The idiom means to pretend that you are not sexually interested in someone so that they will become more interested in you. 又如：

You shouldn’t be so depressive, Tony! Your girlfriend is just playing hard to get. If you don’t pay attention to her, I’m sure, she will pay attention to you within three days.
(译文：你不该如此的沮丧的，Tony. 你女朋友只是故意装出难以接近的样子，如果你不理睬她，我肯定不出三天，她就会来找你。)

今天我们要学习的第二个片语是Over the hill. 它的字面意思是“在山岗之上”，常用来比喻一个人年龄很大了，不再具有什么魅力，干什么事情都不太灵便了。The idiom indicates someone who is no longer young, and therefore no longer attractive or good at doing things. For example:

Now that Sam is over the hill, let’s do it. We are so young and should do more.
(译文：既然Sam已经上岁数了，就让我们干吧。我们那么年轻，应该多干点的。)

注意，这个片语是用来形容老年人的，特别强调老年人因为岁数的原因而做起事情来显得不灵便或根本就不能完成某些事情。又如：

My grandpa can’t move the heavy box because he is over the hill. He has to ask for help.
(译文：我爷爷搬不动这个沉重的箱子，因为他已经上岁数了。他不得不请求帮助。)

结束语：一般上了岁数的人虽然行动不便(be over the hill)，但是却拥有丰富的经验。如果人们故意装出不肯合作或难以接近的样子(play hard to get)，一般情况下，他们都能够察觉到的。

人们常说钱不是万能的，但现实生活中有许多人却认为金钱万能，他们不惜铤而走险，因而贪污、贩毒才成为社会公害。其实不论是中国还是外国，这些现象都存在。也许外国人也认为金钱万能吧!难怪在英文中也有“金钱万能”的说法呢，那就是money talks!

That money talks, I’ll not deny. This is the reason why more and more people always commit a crime.
(译文：金钱万能，这点我不想否认。这也就是为什么越来越多的人犯罪的原因。)

注意，片语money talks在使用时表达的是一个完整的意思，因此常位于句首作原因状语。The idiom is used to say that people with money have power and can get what they want. 曾在网上看到一则消息，说是一个哑巴偷了一百万元被发现，这笔钱的主人请了一个懂哑语的教授帮助翻译哑语。这个哑吧被指着枪，非常害怕，所以说出了这笔钱的藏身之处。但这个教授立即告诉这笔钱的主人：“哑巴说即使杀了他，他也不会告诉钱的下落的”。这里这位教授就在金钱万能的观念下扭曲了自己的灵魂。有钱总是好的，但如果被金钱所迷惑，就可能丧失人性。看看下面这个句子是怎么说的：

Believe it or not, a great number of people think that money talks, so they try their best to get more money, even in an illegal way.
(译文：不论你相信与否，相当一部分人认为金钱万能，所以即使用一种非法的手段, 他们也要尽力的获得更多的钱。)

下面我们介绍今天的第二个片语：put one’s money where one’s mouth is.
从字面上看，这个片语的意思是“把某人的钱放在他的嘴边”。这到底是什么意思呢？我们知道，人们常用钱来打赌表示肯定会做某事, 如果你告诉别人你能做某事或你相信某事，那么一个好办法就是用钱作赌注，表示你支持自己的说法。这个片语的意思正是来自于此种概念，意思是“说话算话，许下的话要算数，用行动支持你的说法。”The idiom is used to show one’s support for what you say or something that you really believe through your actions, rather than just one’s words. For example:

The governor agreed with our plan, but till now he hasn’t put his money where his mouth is.
(译文：这位政府官员同意了我们的计划，但直到现在他还没有说话算数。)

注意，这个片语特别是指“某人采取实际行动来完成曾经许诺过的话”。如：

Now that you have promised that you would go exercising every day, it is now the time to put your money where your mouth is. Let’s go!
(译文：既然你已经承诺要每天去锻炼，现在是说话算数，采取实际行动支持你说法的时候了。走吧!)

结束语：资本主义社会奉信金钱万能(money talks)，他们认为私人财产神圣不可侵犯。而社会主义社会崇尚精神领域的东西，倡导崇高的道德标准，比如要以己奉公，诚信，可靠，说话算数(put one’s money where one’s mouth is)等。

没有钱的日子寸步难行，所以人们总是梦想着有一天能够突然获得很多钱。许多电视剧或电影就常常以一个穷光蛋突然间获得一笔巨大的财富而展开情节。在英文中，“突然间获得很多钱”的说法有许多，最简单的是：be in the money, 先看看下面这句话是怎么说的：

Historically, Many plays referred to a poor young man who always had a dream to be in the money, and then, the dream came true and he tried his best to dangle after a beautiful woman. It has become an old theme now.
(译文：以前，许多剧本总是提到一个穷人总想一天暴富起来，并且他的梦想实现了，于是他尽力的追求一个美丽的女子。现在这个题材已经太老了。)

这里的片语be in the money意思就是“暴富，富裕”。特别是当人们突然间有了一大笔钱，或者获得一笔没有意想到的额外金钱时，常用这个片语，所以这个片语常译为“突然间暴富，一下子富裕起来”。To be in the money is to have a lot of money suddenly, or when you did not expect to. For another example:

If you are in the money, what will be the first thing that you mostly want to do? Buying an expensive car or a grand villa?
(译文：如果你突然间暴富起来，你最想做的第一件事是什么？买一辆贵重的小车还是一个豪华的别墅？)

下面我们向大家介绍一个容易与上面的片语意思相混的片语：be right on the money. 它的意思是“完全正确，非常正确”。有时这个right可以去掉，直接用“be on the money”。If you indicate that something is right on the money，you just tell other people that something is completely correct or right. Fox example:

I got the news yesterday that I had passed CET6 test. Your guide is right on the money. The questions you explained were tested as a whole.
(译文：昨天获悉我已经通过了英语六级考试。你的指导完全正确，你解析的问题全部被考到了。)

中国第一艘载人航天飞船成功发射并圆满完成飞行任务引起了我们大家的热烈讨论。同事小张在这方面了解的知识很多，他关于飞船发射的一些知识讲解就完全正确。

What he explained about how to launch the first manned spaceship was right on the money.
(译文：他关于载人航天飞船如何发射的解析完全正确。)

结束语：如果我有天真的突然间获得了很多钱(be in the money)，在如何花费上我想我的决定必须是完全正确的 (be right on the money)。也许我会捐钱到穷困的小学，支助一些虽考上大学但无法支付昂贵学费的学生等等。
