Be joined at the hip & Shoot from the hip

这里“交情深厚的”,可以用一个比较传神的英文来表达:be joined at the hip. 如:

The two are joined at the hip.

If you say that two people are joined at the hip, you mean they are intimate. Especially, they will help each other when being in serious trouble. For example:

John and May are joined at the hip. Whatever difficulties anyone of the two suffered from, they always helped each other.

Sorry, I said that. I shouldn’t have shot from the hip.

If you say that someone shoots from the hip, you mean that they react to situations or give their opinion very quickly, without stopping to think. It was shooting from the hip!”

You don’t have to shoot from the hip. You have the leisure to think, to decide.

be joined at the hip的意思是“交情很深的”;shoot from the hip的意思是“信口开河”,也可以译为“胡说八道”,有时我们也写作fire from the hip.

Phase out & Walk all over someone

The factory is phasing out that product. So it’s very difficult to buy it in the future.

phase本来的意思是to make something happen gradually in a planned way,即使事情以计划好的方式逐渐的发生,而out是否定性副词,所以phase out 就是指“逐渐把某物淘汰”。To phase out something is to gradually stop using or providing it. For example:

Many countries called for the immediate sanctions against Iraq and phasing out the oil-for-food humanitarian program.

Some people who let others walk all over them should change themselves. The first thing they must do is to become more confident.

To walk all over someone means to treat someone badly by always making them do what you want them to do,without caring about what they want or feel.

Do you have no pride? Everyone knows, it’s important not to let others walk all over you. Why do you always let him walk all over you? Oh, I’m fed up with you.

A hard nut to crack & Face sth. head-on

All the candidates are very excellent. It’s indeed a hard nut to crack to choose the best one.

You know, we often say Speaking English very well is a hard nut to crack to most Chinese people. If you say that something is a hard nut to crack, you mean that it’s difficult to do or to understand.

My manager is a hard nut to crack. He always shouts at me about what I have done.

遇到了这些hard nuts to crack, what will you do?

Everyone will suffer from more difficulties in life, and the positive attitude is to face it head-on.

If someone deals with a problem head on, they don’t try to avoid it, but deal with it in a direct and determined way, we call they face it head-on.

In October 1996, doctors told Lance Armstrong that he had cancer and gave him far less than a 50-percent chance of recovery. But he faced the hit head-on. His legendary iron will helped him beat the cancer.
