At sixes and sevens & One in a thousand

The little boy’s mother felt obliged to train him whose room was always at sixes and sevens.

If you say that something or someone is at sixes and sevens, you mean that they are confused and disorganized.  Fox example:

The government is at sixes and sevens over the issue of social violence.

The New Concept English is one in a thousand. A great many people have made a great progress in learning English under its help.

If you say that something or someone is one in a thousand, you mean that they are excellent.

The doctor was nominated as the director of technology department when he became a member of our factory last week. He must be one in a thousand.

Two-time someone & Once bitten, twice shy

After a long time of dating, Karen found out that his boyfriend was two-timing her. Broken-hearted, she stopped seeing him.

If you say that your boyfriend/girlfriend is two-timing you, you mean he or she is keeping loving relationship with both you and another. 又如:

His girlfriend was two-timing him. He decided to take it well because he knew that she is too beautiful and smart to keep her around him.

Lisa couldn’t help wondering if all men were like her forward boyfriend who two-timed her. Once bitten, twice shy, you know. She certainly wasn’t in a hurry to begin another new relationship.

The idiom indicates that if you are bitten by a snake, you will be afraid of rope in ten years.

When he fell off a horse, he sworn that he would never try to ride horses, you know, once bitten, twice shy.

Two’s company & Six of one and half a dozen of the other

John and his girlfriend, Michelle, were eating happily while one of their old friends saw them and joined. After a while, John whispered to him “don’t you have to be somewhere? Two’s company, you know.”

这个片语是省略用法,完整的形式是two’s company, three’s crowd. The idiom means that a couple people are comfortable, if there is another one, he must be embarrassed. 如:

Tom and Ken was chum. But every night, Ken was always at other workmates’ room, because Tom and his girlfriend occupied the whole room and Ken knew that two’s company, three’s crowd.

Man:“Do you want to steak or seafood?”
Woman: “It’s six of one and half a dozen of the other, I like to eat both. You have the right to decide.”

在这个对话中我们看到一个很长的片语six of one and half a dozen of the other,它的意思是“半斤八两、一回事”。 我们常说one of six,但这里为什么是six of one呢? The idiom used to say that both things that are involved in a situation are equally.

I say she’s a waitress. She says she’s a server. It’s six of one and a half dozen of the other.

第二个片语是six of one and half a dozen of the other,意思是半斤八两,没有什么差别的。
