英语中的数字片语确实有趣，如果要形容一个人很完美，片语a perfect ten就很值得一用。看看下面的句子是如何用这个片语来描述一个人的：

Pat thinks Liz is a perfect 10. He likes everything about her.
(译文：Pat认为Liz是一个完美无瑕的人，他喜欢她的一切。)

在美国人的意识里，他们衡量事物往往有一个从一到十的刻度，如果是“一”就表示很糟糕，相反如果是“十”就表示非常的完美，非常的优秀。所以片语a perfect 10的意思是“完美无瑕的人或事物”。本来perfect 就已经表示完美和优秀了，为什么还要加上一个10呢？目的很明显，就是为了强调嘛！所以我们也可以译为“十分完美的人或事物”。If you say someone is a perfect 10, you mean he or she is as good as possible. 注意，如果我们去掉前面的不定冠词a，那么perfect 10就成了形容词片语，表示“十分完美的”。

This collection is perfect 10 because of the great music and great lyrics.
（译文：这个一个是十分完美的专辑，因为有很好的乐曲和歌词。）

中国的成语和谚语中，有一部分和英语中的成语和谚语相似，如英语的“一石二鸟”(Kill two birds with one stone)和汉语的“一箭双雕”意义相同，现在我们就来看一看：

By reading English articles, you can kill two birds with one stone. You can improve your English and learn more foreign cultures.
(译文：读英文文章，你就能一箭双雕。既可以提高你的英文能力和了解外国文化。)

kill two birds with one stone字面意思就是“一石两鸟”。大家想想，一个石头打下了两只鸟，这不正是“两全其美、一举两得”的意思吗？If you say that doing something will kill two birds with one stone, you mean that it will enable you to achieve two things with one action. 又如：

This is a perfect way to kill two birds with one stone. Why don’t we use it?
(译文：这是一个一箭双雕的完全办法，我们为什么不用呢？)

结束语：一个十分完美的人(a perfect 10)在世上是很难找到的，人人都有或多或少的不足。一箭双雕的事情(kill two birds with one stone)在世上也不多，不过只要用心并不是办不到的。

汉语中含数词的成语很多，比如一箭双雕，半斤八两等等。英文中含数词的成语也不少，而且还十分的传神。在接下来的几讲里我们就将给大家介绍几个。
二加二等于几，是不是一定等于四？让我们先看下面这个句子吧！

They came to the conclusion that he hadn’t run out of the county，putting two and two together.
    (译文：根据事实推断，他们得出这样的结论：他还没有逃出这个国家。)

这里put two and two together从字面上看是指“把二和二放在一起”，但实际上它的意思是“根据现实情况而联想推断”。想想，要正确判断事实是不是需要从其正反两方面反复推敲，再综合评定？所以人们用put two and two together来表示“根据事实推断。” If you put two and two together, you work out the truth about something or yourself, by using the information that is available to you. 又如：

Michelle always smiled to Ken and bought lunch to him every day. Putting two and two together, Ken eventually realized that Michelle really liked him.
(译文：Mechell总是对着Ken笑，并每天都给他买午餐。Ken最后综合情况评定，Mechelle真的喜欢上了他。)

在英语中用一些含数词的片语会使语言更加丰富多彩，生动活泼，从而使文章达到良好的修辞效果。比如：

Rose is my one and only, I love only her.
（译文：Rose是我唯一的那一位，我只爱她一个。）

在这个句子中，片语one’s one and only的意思是“某人的心上人，唯一的那一位”，也就是指“某人唯一心爱的人。”这里，我们可以看出用数字来表示某些意思会显得很有说服力，语气的强烈程度也就不言而喻。The idiom used to emphasize that someone is the only one you love. 当两个人正当缠绵时，你对你的女朋友说上这么一句，她会幸福死的。

In the happy kingdom of love, you are my one and only. Oh, I believe You and I will stop breathing at the same time.
(译文：在幸福的爱情国度里，你就是我的唯一，哦，我相信我们会在同一个时间停止呼吸。)

注意，这个片语有时演变为the one and only, 用在名人刚出台表演时的介绍语当中，此时是为了起强调突出作用。“the one and only”can be used in front of the name of an actor, singer or other famous person when they are being introduced on a show, for example, “…one of the greatest ever rock performers, the one and only JeChen… ”

结束语: 笔者单位七月份才从大学里分来了一位女生，人长得满清秀。不过几日，室友就开始无微不至的关怀人家的日常生活。根据现有情况综合推断(put two and two together)，我那个室友肯定是想成为人家唯一所爱的人（become someone’s one and only）。

以前念书时没有好好的学习英语，成天就知道伙同寝室的男生去约女生逛街。工作一年后才发现英语是多么的重要，所以决定改过自新好好学习。对了，这里的“改过自新”可以用片语turn over a new leaf来表示。

When Shaq was a junior high school student, he played pranks to attract attention. But everyone was scornful to it. So he then turned over a new leaf and decided to drop the pranks and tried his best to study.
(译文：当Shaq是一个初中生时，他为引人注意常做恶作剧。但每个人都不屑一顾。所以后来他改过自新，决定停止做恶作剧并努力学习。)

这里turn over a new leaf 意思是“痛改前非，改过自新”。Turn over这里是“翻转”，即“整个翻转过来”的意思。大家知道，树木每年春天都要翻出新芽，这样整个夏天看起来才生气勃勃呀！这个片语正是从这个意思发展而来，树木翻出(turn over )新的叶片来（a new leaf），不正是一个崭新的开始吗？To turn over a new leaf means to change the way you behave and become a better person.很多时候，我们还看到人们用这个片语来表示“开始新的人生，谱写新的篇章”，比如：

Their highly efficient, programmatic and creative work will turn over a new leaf in the course of healthy development of real estate industry.
（译文：通过高效务实和创造性的工作，为房地产事业的健康发展演绎新的传奇，谱写新的篇章。）

正因为自己知道英语的重要性，所以总是教导侄儿要认真学习英语。这小子还真不赖，才上小学一年级就可以进行一些招呼、祝贺之类的英文了。不过当你表扬他时，他总是假装说“一般一般啦！”，我想他肯定是在求取更多的赞赏吧(fish for compliments)。

Don’t keep saying your English is poor. Your English is really great! I think you are just fishing for compliments!
(译文：不要一直说你的英文很差！你的英语真的很好，我想你只是在求取赞赏吧！)

这里，片语fish for compliments的意思是“求取赞赏，故意要别人说赞扬的话”。Fish for本来的意思就是指拐弯抹角的打听或谋取某事，加上一个赞美（compliments），意思自然明了。当我们说某人在fish for compliments时，常包含有“他们往往是先批评自己，采取要扬先抑的策略”的意思。The idiom means to try to make someone say something nice about you, usually by first criticizing yourself. 有些人在书法上有一些造诣，不过他们有时就会故意求取赞赏了。看看他们是怎么说的：

I don’t hope you think that I’m fishing for a compliment, but have you had time to take a look at my new handwriting work? The reviews are good, but I’d like to hear what you think about it.”
(译文：我希望你不会认为我在求取赞赏，不过你有没有时间看一看我的新书法作品呢？反映不错，可我倒是想听听你的意见。)

结束语：今天我们学习了两个片语。第一个是turn over a new leaf, 意思是“悔过自新，重新做人”。第二个片语是fish for compliment, 意思是“求取赞赏，”含有“洋洋得意，故意要求别人说赞美的话”的意思。
