Mess things up & Tried-and-true

To mess things up means to spoil or ruin something, especially something important or something that has been carefully planned.

Late arrival of the train messed up all our plans.

If you mess things up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about our mistakes, learn from them.

If the two of you treat each other sincerely, you’ll have a friendship that’s tried-and-true.

If something is tried-and-true, it means that has been tried and tested and shown to be true, reliable or successful. For example, if a cookbook has tried-and-true recipes, it means that the recipes in the cookbook have all been tried and proven to produce the delicious food .If a cure for illness is tried-and-true, and then the cure has been tested and cured the people of the illness. A friendship is tried and true if the two of you have been through difficult times and relationship, yet have still been able to remain as friends.

This is our tried-and-true method. We’ve done it many times and know it works.

Under the weather & Give someone the benefit of the doubt

A: What’s wrong with you? You look a little under the weather.
B: I’ve been under some stress lately. I have had lots of job to do. Plus, I haven’t been feeling well.
A:怎么了?

If someone is under the weather, then he or she is not feeling well.

She said that she wasn’t sick, but just feeling under the weather.

诚恳、踏实,对朋友要友善,即使朋友对你不住,在未证实以前也要把人往好处想(give someone the benefit of the doubt)。

You need to give people the benefit of the doubt because you will need that as well.

片语give someone the benefit of the doubt的意思是“在事实未经证实之前认定某人是无罪的;往好处想别人”。 The idiom means to accept what someone tells you even though you think they may be wrong or lying, but you cannot be sure. For example:

There was no evidence that the cat killed our birds while we were away. Let’s therefore give him the benefit of the doubt.

不过在没有证实之前,我还是不能这么想(give him the benefit of the doubt)。

Be hard pressed to do sth. & Go for a dip

这里的“忘记某人很困难”可以用片语 be hard pressed to forget someone来表示。一般的,在英文中表达“做某事很困难”常使用片语be hard pressed to do something, 比如:

Hispanic food has become popular throughout the country. You’d be hard pressed to find a town without at least one restaurant serving popular Hispanic food.

be hard pressed to do something意思是“做某事很困难”。 That is to say, if you find something very difficult and stressful to do, you are hard pressed to do it.

You would be hard pressed to find anybody more willing to joke than her.

It is hotter and hotter. How about going for a dip?

Go for a dip有时也译作“戏水”。If you plan to go for a dip, then you are going to spend no long time in the water, especially for enjoying.

Don’t plan on going for a dip—-the water is too cold!

结束语:母亲虽然过世了,但我依然记得她烧的那一手好菜,没有人比母亲烧的菜更让人回味了(you’d be hard pressed to find a better cook than my mother)。
