Take someone up on sth. & Show someone a good time

I’m glad to take you up on your invitation. I’ll join you for dinner tonight.

To take someone up on something is to accept an invitation or suggestion.

I will visit Beijing for a few days with one of my workmates who is going to see a doctor and I have taken Tony Lee up on his kind invitation to take a look at Qinghua University, who was my classmate in junior high school.

对了,这里的“盛情款待某人”在英文中可以用show someone a good time来表示。

When we came to visit little Zhang, he and her girlfriend showed us a good time. After sumptuous banquet, they took us to a dance hall to dance and sing.

从字面可以看出show someone a good time的意思是“给某人一个快乐的时光”,即give someone a good time, 现在大多用来表示“盛情款待某人”。To show someone a good time mostly means to treat someone with great kindness.

In order to show me a good time when I called on my cousin. He brought me into a five star restaurant to have dinner.

结束语:为盛情款待我(show me a good time),表弟把我带进了一家五星级饭店。我接受了他的邀请(take my cousin up on his invitation),高高兴兴的享受起来。

Live up to & Make someone an offer he/she can’t refuse

These famous football players will try their best to live up to the goals of taking championship.

If something or someone lives up to a particular standard or promise, they do as well as they were expected to, do what they promised etc, especially, it means to finish something well after trying hard. For example:

There is no way I can live up to your expectations. I’m not perfect.

In July 1996, the Los Angeles Lakers made Shaquille O’Neal an offer he couldn’t refuse. He signed a seven-years $120 million contract with them.

在这个句子中片语make someone an offer he/she can’t refuse的意思是“提供给某人难以拒绝的优厚条件”。If you make someone an offer he/she can’t refuse, especially, you offer them a great number of money so that they can’t refuse to do what you want them to do.

Tom made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. He asked me to trade his computer for my old cell phone. He must be crazy!

第二个片语是make someone an offer he/she can’t refuse意思是“提供某人难以拒绝的优厚条件”。

Bring out sth. & Lay it on thick

He brought out the significant aspects of the problem. 这里bring out 作“显露,揭示,揭露”讲,相当于make clear; reveal; demonstrate.

Kelly is wearing a new outfit that shade looks good on her. It brings out the blue in her eyes.

To bring out something is to serve as a foil to.

I think that situations in the face of threat can bring out the best in people.

My workmates considered my handwriting work a great artwork. But I think they’re just laying it on a little thick.

The idiom refers to someone who praises other people or something too much, especially in order to get what he or she wants.

When we compliment others, we must find something specific to praise and make sure our compliments are sincere, otherwise, they will think we’re laying it on a little thick.
