Monica: Ross, could you come and help me with the spaghetti, please?
Ross: Yeah. (They go to the kitchen.)
Mrs. Geller: Oh, we’re having spaghetti! That’s…. easy.
Monica: I know this is going to sound unbelievably selfish, but, were you planning on bringing up the whole baby/lesbian thing? Because I think it might take some of the heat off me.

Bring up是指打开关于某件事情的话题，比如，跟女朋友谈了两年恋爱了，就是无法开口提结婚的事情，担心她会因此而离开我：

We have a great time together, but I am just afraid to bring up the marriage and family topic. She might leave me.

为什么担心呢？因为她说过：It’s the end of a woman’s life when it comes to bringing up children. 这个地方的bring up就是抚养孩子的意思了。在老友记里面，莫妮卡想让罗斯提起离婚的事情，这样，莫妮卡的母亲就不会老盯着她找她的茬了。所以，take some of the heat off me中的heat指的就是adverse comments or hostile criticism，严厉的或者敌意的指责和批评。Take the heat off someone就是停止批评或指责某人。一般说来，公众人物比较害怕媒体的攻击，如:

Heat from the press forced the mayor to resign.
来自媒体的指责迫使市长提出辞呈。

说到“呕吐”，很多人都会用一个比较正式的词 vomit, 这固然不错，但事实上美国人，尤其是小孩子大都会用 throw up 这个词组来表示，比如：I feel terrible, I’ve been throwing up all night! 还有一词也能表达同样的意思，那就是puke, 如：He puked all over the carpet. throw up 与puke相比更侧重于表示生理上的反应，而puke 还经常以这样的表达法出现：make you (want to) puke, 表示某件事或某个人的行为令你作呕，例如：

That kind of greed makes me puke!
You really make me puke! How could you do such a terrible thing?

有时候当我们想打探别人的想法时会旁敲侧击地问许多问题，这就是feel sb out 所要表达的意思，又比如：I thought I’d feel out some of my colleagues before the meeting.

口语forget it 在不同的情况下可以表达不同的意思，在上面的对话中，Rachel所说的forget it 意思就是拒绝替Phoebe去试探Frank, 又比如：’Can you lend me $20.’ ‘Forget it, no way.’ forget it 还可以用来表示It’s all right 或 It’s OK 等意思，尤其是当别人为一件小事而向你说对不起的时候，比如：’Sorry I didn’t phone.’ ‘Forget it.’ 最后，我们还是来看一些例句仔细体会一下forget it 的用法：

‘What did you say?’ ‘ Nothing, just forget it.’
How much do I owe you? Oh, forget it — it’s nothing.
If you’re just going to stand there and criticize, forget it.
