我们知道雪球会越滚越大,但前提是我们必须先做一小雪球,钱也会生钱,前提同样是我们必须先做投资,这也就是为什么菲比会在卖唱时会先把2美元放进自己的帽子里,这样她就能“滚雪球”了,也就是get the ball rolling,这一习语源自体育用语,一旦球开始滚起来,比赛也就开始了,因此它也可以说成set/start/the ball rolling,表示“使某件事开始”,比如说为设立一项救助基金,政府得先拿出一笔钱:
To start the ball rolling, the government was asked to contribute ¥1 million.
另外,我们还可以说to keep the ball rolling, 表示“使某件事继续”,如:
We should try to keep the ball rolling and get as much of our work done while everyone is still here.
