世博英语脱口秀【9】Get out of here!

Tina: You have nothing to be afraid of. You speak fluent English.
Tony: But I’m afraid my vocabulary is not large enough.
Tina: I don’t think so, Tony. Do you know how many words make up 45% of everything published in English?
Tony: Several thousands, I guess.
Tina: 50.
Tony: Get out of here! It’s impossible!
Tina: It’s a simple fact. And native speakers only need about 3000 words for their daily life.
Tony: Well then, perhaps I don’t have to be too worried since my vocabulary is larger than that.

Why Can’t People in the Corporate World be Friendly?

The way friends greet each other is very different from the way professional people greet each other in formal situations. An enthusiastic, “Hi, Jack!” works among friends, but if a business person used this way to greet a colleague in a meeting, it would be extremely awkward! “Hi!” expresses too much enthusiasm and intimacy. It would be uncomfortable to bring intimacy into the boardroom. “Hello, it’s nice to meet you,” is a more standard greeting- with a strong and quick handshake too, of course. For these reasons, business people have the image of being very stiff and robotic. They wear black, expressionless suits and carry nondescript briefcases. There’s not much room for originality in the corporate world!

“Hello, it’s nice to meet you.”

Tony: Tina, what would you say when you meet your old friend Jack on a plane?
Tina: Hi, Jack!
Tony: Hold on! It sounds like “hijack”, like hijack a plane. You might scare off those people on the plane.
Tina: You are kidding, right? I guess you can say things like “Hello, Jack!” or “Good to see you here, Jack!”
Tony: Yeah, but I still think “Hi, Jack” would be the first choice of most people.
Tina: You are right. With old friends, it’s unlikely for people to use formal greetings such as “I am pleased to meet you, Jack.”

Jack!
或者“Good to see you here,Jack!”
和老朋友见面,人们不太会使用正规的话,比如“I am pleased to meet you,Jack.”。
