Keep sth. straight & Prepare someone for the worst

When studying English, we have to keep language points straight, which is totally confusing us.

If you keep (get) something straight, you make sure that you understand it properly, or that someone else does. For example:

The newspaper gave us a great deal of information about how to purchase a new house. We couldn’t simple keep it all straight!

After interview, Mr. James Scott didn’t think that he did well on it, so he prepared himself for the worst.

If you decided to prepare yourself for the worst to something, you expected it very bad, and had no any hopes. Let’s take a look at other examples:

After checking out for several times, the doctor confirmed that Bill had cancer, and the cancer had already spread throughout his body. Then the doctor told Bill’s fiancée to prepare her for the worst.

In one’s seventh heaven & On cloud nine

When she got married, she felt that she was in her seventh heaven.

To be in one’s seventh heaven means to be extremely happy. For example:

Horace felt he was in seventh heaven while Lisa consented to have dinner with him that night.
注意,这个片语我们也常写作someone is in seventh heaven.

英语中还有一个数字片语与in one’s seventh heaven表达的意思相近on cloud nine.

He is on cloud nine when his girlfriend gives him a kiss.

If you say someone is on cloud nine, you mean he or she is very happy about something. For example:

Denise is on cloud nine all the day. The guy she likes invited her to go to the cinema last night.

At sixes and sevens & One in a thousand

The little boy’s mother felt obliged to train him whose room was always at sixes and sevens.

If you say that something or someone is at sixes and sevens, you mean that they are confused and disorganized.  Fox example:

The government is at sixes and sevens over the issue of social violence.

The New Concept English is one in a thousand. A great many people have made a great progress in learning English under its help.

If you say that something or someone is one in a thousand, you mean that they are excellent.

The doctor was nominated as the director of technology department when he became a member of our factory last week. He must be one in a thousand.
