纯情的女人容易被那些城府极深的男人吸引同时也被欺骗，所以她们常呼吁男人简单就好。反过来讲(on the flip side), 城府再深的男人，也容易被漂亮的女人轻松搞定(be conquered as easy as one, two, three)。
在上面的这一段陈述中，朋友已经看到了我们今天要给大家介绍的第一个片语as easy as one, two, three，它的意思是“轻而易举的”。

This software isn’t difficult to use. It’s as easy as one, two, three.
(译文：使用这软件并不困难。这是件轻而易举的事。)

从字面上讲，这个片语告诉我们，某物像1，2，3一样，不管它们作加减乘除都很简单，是不是？所以人们就用来修饰某事是容易完成或某物是很容易操作的。The idiom refers to something that is very easy to finish or complete. For example:

English learning is not as easy as one, two, three. We must be prepared to take a long time effort.
(译文：英语学习并不是件很容易的事。我们必须做好长时间努力的准备。)

英语学习决不是一朝一夕之事，大家肯定深有体会。但是学习也有一个方法的问题，方法得当，事半功倍，方法不当，事倍功半。我想，在学习中善于动脑、善于总结(boil down to something)可能就是得当的方法之一吧。

I think, learning English can boil down to three simple ingredients: persistence, proper ways and good teachers.
(译文：我认为，学习英语能总结为三个简单的因素：坚持，正确的方法和好的老师。)

在这个句子，我们注意到一个片语boil down to something，它的意思是“归结，简而言之”。Boil是“煮沸”的意思，把汤煮沸使之浓缩，就是精简，精练，归纳的意思了。This metaphorical usage alludes to reducing and concentrating a substance by boiling off liquid, 相当于英文中的sum up or summarize, or, indicate, especially as a final judgement or analysis. If a long statement, argument，idea etc boils down to a single one,  then it is the main point or cause. For example:

What this issue boils down to is that the council doesn’t want to spend more money.
(译文：简言之，这个问题就是委员会不想花更多的钱。)

结束语：送给大家两句话，结束今天的课程。第一句：有些看起来轻而易举的事(as easy as one, two, three)，做起来就并非易事。第二句：生活是一本很难读懂的书，必须不断总结，归纳(boil down to something)才能掌握其精髓。

你谈论过你的上司吗？如果你本不想谈论，但你的同事硬要你直言不讳怎么办？看看下面的简短对话，这两个人形成了鲜明的对比：

A: I think our boss is pretty … uh … nice and …he…
B: Why don’t you call a spade a spade? He’s a rude, uncaring, selfish man!
(译文：
A：我觉得我们老板挺……呃……好的，而且……他……
      B：你何不有话直说呢？他是一个粗鲁、不懂得关心别人，而且自私的人！)

在这段小对话中我们看到一个片语call a spade a spade，它的意思是“直言不讳，有话直说”，相当于英文中的to speak frankly and directly. 从字面上看，这个片语是指称呼一个铁锹(spade)为铁锹，不正是指直接称呼而不拐弯抹角吗？Call a spade a spade 的起源至少可以追溯到 1520 年，英国英语中的 to call a spade a bloody shovel 即来源于此，其含意亦为“直言不讳”，只是相比之下后者的语气更强一些。To call a spade a spade means to speak about things in a direct and honest way, even though it may be impolite to do this. For example:

Calling a spade a spade on foreign affairs sometimes seems difficult for diplomats.
(译文：外交官在处理外交事务的时候很难做到直言不讳。)

不知道朋友们有没有这样的经历？小时候总不喜欢学习，可又不敢直言不讳(call a spade a spade) 的向父母说。假期才过，刚一开学就盼望着下一个假期的来临。对了，在英文中用来表达“盼望、渴望”的词很多，今天我们就来看一下其中的一个：long for something. 首先我们看一下面的例句：

The pupils are longing for the holidays.
(译文：学生们渴望假期来临。)

从字面上来看，这个片语是指“长久的等待着某事”，所以被人们翻译为“期待某事或渴望某事”。To long for something means to want something very much, especially when it seems unlikely to happen soon.
贫穷的人们渴望富有，被病魔折磨的人们渴望健康，被战火弥漫的人们渴望和平。这些话中的“渴望”我们都可以用上这个片语，比如下面的句子：

During the second Gulf War, Iraqis have a strong longing for peace.
(译文：在这第二次海湾战争期间，伊拉克人民强烈的渴望和平。)

结束语：办公室的小张很优秀，但也腼腆，三十岁了还没有找到女友。最近看到建设银行里新来了一位不错的年青姑娘，天天跑去存钱或取钱，渴望(long for something)引起人家的注意。同事们好不容易为他们安排了约会，第二天问他情况如何，他说他本想直言不讳的(call a spade a spade) 说出他内心对她的爱慕，可吞吐了一晚上，还是噎在了喉咙。

上一讲提到，许多人为了追求发展的机会(seek one’s fortune)而选择了跳槽(job-hopping)。从结果上看，有些人失败了，境况依旧，甚至雪上加霜，但有些人也成功了，他们的处境得到了好转。“处境得到好转”在英文中用片语turn something around来表达。像往常一样，还是先来看下面的例句：

In order to turn his life around, Hans decided to take part in graduate entrance examination. (译文：为了脱离困境，使自己的生活得到好转，汉斯决定参加研究生入学考试。)

在这个例句中，片语turn one’s life around的意思是“使某人的处境好转”。一个人生活不如意，只有改变自己的生活方式，才能有所改观，片语正是从这个意思而来。If a business, department etc that is not successful turns around, or if someone turns his or her life around, it starts to be successful. For example:

Bob has turned his life around. He doesn’t need to steal anymore.
(译文：Bob已经脱离了困境，他不需要再偷窃了。)

下面我们将向朋友们介绍今天的第二个片语：be in the nick of time.它的意思是Just at the critical moment; just in time, 即“正当紧要关头；在关键时刻；正及时，恰好”的意思。Nick 在英语里作为俚语，指监狱，一个人如果蹲在监狱里，那段时间当然就是自己改过自新的关键时刻了，也许这就是这个片语in the nick of time 意思的由来吧! 好了，还是先看下面的例句：

Janet almost missed her flight, but she made it in the nick of time.
(译文：Janet几乎错过了她的航班，但她还是在关键时刻赶上了。)

in the nick of time是一个介词片语。The idiom means that something is just before it is too late, or just before something bad happens，for another example:

Our culture places a high value on being punctual. My friend always complained when I attended his party not being in the nick of time.
 (译文：我们的文化很重视准时。当我没有及时出席朋友的宴会时，他总是埋怨我。)

结束语：Mr.Jon 是一个很有才能的人，每当紧要关头(in the nick of time)，他总是能出些到好的点子，让我们境况得到好转(turn one’s life around)。
