在伊拉克战争中，美英联军轻而易举的攻下了伊拉克首都巴格达，这不得不让人顿生疑问：那些精锐的共和国卫队为什么不战而退？这究竟是怎么回事？

What on earth happened with the elite Republican Guard？It was easy for the American troops to control over Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.
(译文：精锐的共和国卫队究竟怎么了？美军很容易就控制了伊拉克首都巴格达。)

片语on earth 在英文中经常用来表示强调，表达意思近于中文的“到底”、“究竟”。When the phrase, on earth, appears among a sentence, it usually shows an emphasis about the attitude of a person. 看看下面一段对话是怎样用on earth来表达强调语气的。

A: Let’s go back, Tody. What on earth are you waiting for?
B: Shhhh! I’m waiting for a pretty girl who had lunch at that table yesterday.
(译文：
A：回去啦，Tody,你到底在等什么？
B：嘘! 等一个漂亮的女孩，昨天她就在那个桌上吃过午餐的。)

注意，在英文中表达同样意思的片语还有“in the world”“the hell”或“in the hell.” 它们扮演着强调疑问句或否定句的角色，如：What in the world happened?“究竟发生什么事了？” 但”the hell”或”in the hell”是比较粗鲁的说法，如：Where in the hell have you left my car?这句话的意思是“你到底把我的车扔哪去了？”

下面我们向朋友们介绍今天的第二个片语：look forward to. 先看看下面的例句：

When I am confused, I always look forward to finding out what on earth happened.
(译文：当有些事使我迷惑时，我总是期待着能弄明白究竟怎么回事。)

这里片语look forward to 表达的意思是“期待着。”从字面上看(literally)，如果人们朝前展望(look forward)，内心一定满怀着某种期待吧!所以我们把这个片语直接翻译为“期待某事。” To look forward to something is to be excited and pleased about something that is going to happen. For example:

We look forward to visiting the Great Wall someday.
(译文：我们期望有一天能去参观长城。)

结束语：今天我们学习了两个片语。一个是on earth, 用在句中一般表达强调，常译为“究竟。”另一个是look forward to, 意思是“期待某事。”注意，这个片语中中的to不是不定式符号，而是介词，后面所用动词的形式必须是ing形式，类似的还有：stick to ; pay attention to; object to; devote oneself to.

决策总是很难的一件事。香港艺人张国荣坠楼身亡前写的遗书中就说“认识一位二十多岁青年，在与“唐唐”间不知如何选择才好，十分困扰，所以要自杀。”生活中的确有许多事难以决策。有些事需要坚持，有的则需要放弃。英文中放弃可以用give up来表达，也可以用pass on something来表达。看下面的例句：

I passed on the movie and just went back to my class to learn English.
(译文：我放弃看电影而回到教室学习英语。)

片语pass on something的意思是“放弃某事、某物。”Pass on 有“去世、传递”的意思，但随着社会的发展，美国人也用来表示“放弃某样事物或选择，”从意义上说相当于give up. To pass on something means to not accept an invitation or offer. For example:

I passed on walking and toured by riding a bike.
(译文：我放弃步行而骑车游览。)

一代艺人张国荣就这么离开了人世，很多fans都不能平静的接受这个事实。现在我们就来看一看平静的接受某事在英文中该怎么说。先看看下面的例句：

The news that actor Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing(张国荣) jumped to his death in Hong Kong spreads quickly. Many fans cannot take it well.
(译文：张国荣坠楼身亡的消息很快传开，许多追随者不能平静的接爱这个事实。)

片语take something well 意思就是指“平心的、平静的接受某事”。If you take something well, when something unexpected comes out, you can accept it without any angry, sadness or depression. 小时候如果我们考试不及格，父母就不会平静的接受(take it well)。如果女友每次买回新衣服，即使看起来是糟糕透顶的，朋友们也总是说“看起来还不错”，因为如果说出实话，她怎能平心的接受呢？

If you tell Rita that his new dress clashes with shoes, she will be mad at you. She can’t take it well, because she spent a lot of time on selection.
(译文：如果你告诉Rita她的新裙子和鞋子不协调，她将很生气。因为她花了很多时间在挑选上，所以根本不能平心的接受(你的看法)。)

结束语：你的女友是否经常叫你陪她？要么看电影，要么逛超市，要么上街买衣服。所以你不得不放弃许多个人时间(pass on your time)。人们常说女人只要一到商场就会生龙活虎，永远感觉不到累，一点不假。笔者就有过这种经历，某天陪她在商业街逛了一天，本来说是要买双鞋的，可逛了7个小时，直到下午5点了居然什么都没有买。两腿再也拖不动了，买鞋就买鞋吧，可她到了衣服店也要进去逛一逛不说，还要试穿几下，最后不是说颜色不好就是款式不合适，然后转身就往下家店子走。最后逛到金饰店，这下倒干脆，一下子买了七千块的铂金项链，我的卡又一次遭到浩劫不说，末了，她说：“今天太晚了，明天继续把鞋子买了。” My god!我想我是再也不能像绅士一样平心的接受了(take it well)。

在英文中我们常用一些简单的片语来表达比较复杂的意思。比如，当我们要描述某人在某方面博学或者精通的时候，就用know a thing or two about something来表达。看看下面的例句：

I once was in the unrequited love with a girl who knew a thing or two about computer.
(译文：我曾经暗恋过一个女孩，在播音方面她比较精通。)

know a thing or two about something这个片语直译似乎应该是：对某事知道一二。但在英文中却恰好相反，它的意思是“博学的、精通的”。To know a thing or two means to be knowledgeable about or know a lot about.
生活中我们常见到一些人，他们自称很精通股市，逢人就摆股票，而且头头是道，让人不得不信。可是他们买的股票不是跌就是被套，看来这些人只是了解一些罢了，并不能算得上精通。看看下面这句话是如何描述的。

Many people claim that they know a thing or two about the stock market. But in fact, they just know nothing.
(译文：许多人称他们很精通股市。但实际上他们什么都不懂。)

俗话说理解万岁，这里的“理解”朋友们知道怎么用英文表达吗？也许大家立刻就会想到understand这个词，但是今天我们介绍的make sense out of也表达的是同样的意思呢!先看看下面的例句：

Xiaohong himself is the only one who can make sense out of his terrible handwriting．
(译文：小红是唯一能了解他自己那潦草手稿的人。)

大家知道make out 除了作“填写、说明”的意思外，还有“了解”的意思，中间加一个sense(感觉，认识)，不正是“了解，理解”的意思吗？To make sense out of something means to understand something, especially something difficult or complicated. For another example:

I can make no sense out of his recent behavior.
(译文：我不了解她近来的行为。)

结束语：笔者一直在研究一些专家关于如何进行英文写作的文章。虽然并不精通英文写作( don’t know a thing or two about writing English articles)，但总是在实践中努力。每看到一篇写得比较好的文章，总是要思考人家安排结构的方法，谴词造句的独特之处，所以也算能了解(make sense out of)人家苦心经营的用意。
