英语习语趣谈【91】身无分文 Get a hearing & Not have a bean

本栏目由李福兵原创编写,Eyre绘图。

国庆长假旅游切实让我对我们国家人口众多的概念有了深刻的认识。本来想清清静静的浏览一下天下名山——峨眉山,可是十月一日早早起身,却在车站足足等了三个多小时才得以出发,因为坐车的人很多。本来车站离峨眉山就那么二十来分钟的车程,从离家算起,到得目的地已经花了四个小时。看来节日长假期间旅客的交通输送问题应该引起有关部门的高度重视了。

More and more people hope that concerned departments get a hearing about the traffic issue during the holidays.
(译文:越来越多的人希望有关部门重视假日期间的交通问题。)

在这个句子中我们看到一个片语get a hearing. Hearing是Hear的名词形式,在这里的意思是“心声,呼声”,所以整个句子的意思是指“听取到呼声,获得心声”,引申为“获得重视,获得注意”。This phrase means when some issues, especial social issues, are becoming more and more important or serious, people do something to make governor get a notice and take actions to cope with them.

Water pollution has become very serious. But the good news is that the issue is getting a hearing.
(译文:水污染已经变得很严重了,但好消息是这个问题正在获得重视。)

去年十一期间同学聚会时获悉同学Andy自己开了一家软件公司,挣了很多钱。今年同学再聚会时却听说他因为吸毒已经身无分文了。哎,如今我们的确应该远离毒品,反毒工作也应该获得重视(get a hearing)呀!

Andy was once a successful man who had set up a software company and had earned a great deal of money. But he hasn’t had a bean since last year he began to drug.
(译文:Andy曾是一个成功的人,他曾建立了一家软件公司并挣了许多钱,但自去年吸毒以来,他已经身无分文了。)

在这个句子中,我们看到一个片语not have a bean, 它的意思是“身无分文”。Bean的意思是 “豆子”, 从字面上看这个片语的意思是指“连一粒豆子都没有”,从而引申为一个人什么也没有了,尤其是指一分钱都没有了。The idiom, not have a bean means to have no money at all. 再看一个例句:

Tom is a millionaire because he has inherited all of his father’s estate. But he spends money like water. We are sure that he will not have a bean five years later.
(译文:Tom是一个大富豪,因为他继承了他父亲的全部财产。但他挥霍无度。我们确信五年后他将身无分文。)

结束语:隔壁张大爷辛苦工作了四五十年,积蓄了二十来万元。本想安度晚年,不料受不了整天无所事事的儿子的诱惑,投资了股市,这下全部赔了进去。突然间身无分文 (not have a bean)的他准备轻生。轻生确实是一个社会问题,应该引起有关部门的高度重视(get a hearing)。

英语习语趣谈【90】做女人挺不好 Have only oneself to blame & Charge someone up

本栏目由李福兵原创编写,Eyre绘图。

笔者最近患上呼吸道感染,喉咙很痛,还咳嗽。花了很多money,病却没有治好。想来想去还是要怪自己,谁叫自己平时不注意锻炼身体,以致自己的抵抗力太低呢?对了,“只能怪自己”可以用英文have only oneself to blame来表示. 比如:

If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of been seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion.

Have only oneself to blame的意思是“只有自己可以责怪。” The idiom is used to say that someone’s problems are their own fault. They can’t blame it on others. For example:

If he fails his exams, he’ll only have himself to blame. He has never worked hard since this semester.
(译文:如果他考试考砸了,他只能责怪他自己,这学期以来他从没有认真学习过。)

由于这次病得不轻,所以发誓要好好锻炼身体。体育锻炼不仅可以增加体质,更重要的是,它可以使人看起来更加精神,也能使你始终保持积极的态度和乐观的精神来面对人生、面对生活中的各种挫折。一句话,它可以charge you up.

Hank loves physical exercises, for it really charges him up.
(译文:Hank喜欢身体锻炼,因为它能使它精神百倍。)

从上面的译文可以看出,charge someone up的意思是“使某人精神百倍”。Charge up原本的意思是“充电”,在中间加上一个代词或表示人名的名词词组,从字面上看表达的意思是“给某人充电,使其有能量”。所以记住了charge up这个片语的本来意思,charge someone up 就不难理解了。If you say that something charges you up, you mean it makes you feel energetic. For example:

After having made a big success, remember to celebrate because that is what charges you up to get through another life challenge.

Have egg on one’s face & Fly in the face of sth.

本栏目由李福兵原创编写,Eyre绘图。

对美国的州长竞选,我唯一的印象就是马克吐温笔下丑陋而尴尬的情形。在英文中有一些片语的由来就与美国的州长竞选有关。比如由于竞选者在演说中被鸡蛋击中这一现象就出现了一个比较传神的片语:have egg on one’s face.

Gerry once claimed to be the best worker in the office, but that time, he failed to work out a task. He really had egg on his face.
(译文:Gerry曾声称是办公室里最好的员工,但那次他却没有完成任务,真是丢脸。)

Have egg on one’s face的意思是“极为丢脸,狼狈不堪”。在美国,当州长竞选候选人在公开发表演讲时,有些反对候选人的人为使其当众出丑,常向候选人扔鸡蛋,使其狼狈不堪,这就形成了表示“极为狼狈”的片语:have egg on one’s face. If someone, especially someone in authority, has egg on their face, they have been made to look stupid by something embarrassing. For example:

He had got 40 points himself during a basketball match. He thought he would become a great hero in his team, but he ended up having egg on his face.
(译文:他在一场篮球比赛中独自获得40分,他想他将成为队中的英雄,结果却以狼狈收场。)

昨天下班感觉很累,所以去做了一下头部按摩,可临走前发现自己没有带钱包,真是have egg on my face呀! 最后我向老板许下“明日补上”的诺言,老板也相信我不是一个违背诺言的人。 “违背诺言”在英文中我们常用breach of faith来表示,但今天我们要向大家介绍另一个表达方法:fly in the face of something. 先看下面的例句:

I didn’t believe everything he said because what he said flied in the face of all the evidence.
(译文:我不相信他说的所有话因为他说的全都违背所有的事实。)

片语fly in the face of something的意思是“违背”。fly有飞越、逃脱的意思,用在这个片语是为了加强语气。The idiom means to be the opposite of what most people think is reasonable, sensible, or normal. 注意,它常含有“公然违抗、悍然不顾”的意思。For example:

I find this hard to believe since it flies in the face of all the principles of game.
(译文:我发现这真难以置信,因为它违背了所有的游戏规则。)

结束语:今天路过新华书店时参与了一项万人拒绝盗版的签名活动。我平生最痛恨的就是盗版的东西了,这些制作盗版的人们简直违背(fly in the face of something)了最起码的良心。所以每当看到他们被打击得狼狈不堪(have egg on one’s face)的时候,心里就很痛快。
