【世博视角】

说到“呕吐”，很多人都会用一个比较正式的词 vomit, 这固然不错，但事实上美国人，尤其是小孩子大都会用 throw up 这个词组来表示，比如：I feel terrible, I’ve been throwing up all night! 还有一词也能表达同样的意思，那就是puke, 如：He puked all over the carpet. throw up 与puke相比更侧重于表示生理上的反应，而puke 还经常以这样的表达法出现：make you (want to) puke, 表示某件事或某个人的行为令你作呕，例如：

That kind of greed makes me puke!
You really make me puke! How could you do such a terrible thing?

Rachel: Phoebe, no! This is, this is insane.
Phoebe: Oh, just ask him!

【世博视角】

有时候当我们想打探别人的想法时会旁敲侧击地问许多问题，这就是feel sb out 所要表达的意思，又比如：I thought I’d feel out some of my colleagues before the meeting.

口语forget it 在不同的情况下可以表达不同的意思，在上面的对话中，Rachel所说的forget it 意思就是拒绝替Phoebe去试探Frank, 又比如：’Can you lend me $20.’ ‘Forget it, no way.’ forget it 还可以用来表示It’s all right 或 It’s OK 等意思，尤其是当别人为一件小事而向你说对不起的时候，比如：’Sorry I didn’t phone.’ ‘Forget it.’ 最后，我们还是来看一些例句仔细体会一下forget it 的用法：

‘What did you say?’ ‘ Nothing, just forget it.’
How much do I owe you? Oh, forget it — it’s nothing.
If you’re just going to stand there and criticize, forget it.

Frank: What’s with him?
Phoebe: Umm, sympathy pains. I thought it was really sweet at first, but now I think he’s just trying to steal my thunder.

菲比：噢，同情我呢！起先我还觉得这真的很好，可现在我觉得他是喧宾夺主（想让别人更关心他，想让别人同情他自己）。

首先需要解释一下什么是sympathy pains. 在少数情况下，当一名妇女怀孕时，她可能自己倒没什么，可她的丈夫却会因此出现呕吐，阵痛等，就好像是在替妻子分担痛苦似的，因此我们就把这种症状称为sympathy pains. 对话中的Phoebe正好在等待分娩，这时Joey突然觉得腰疼得厉害，所以Phoebe说他是得了sympathy pains.

再来说说steal one’s thunder, 从字面上理解它的意思是“偷了某人的雷”，其实这个表达法来源于一个典故：1709年，英国的一名戏剧家John Dennis在他的一部戏中首先使用了一种能模仿打雷效果的机器，虽然这种效果很富新意，但这出戏本身并不成功，仅演出了一回就被撤了下来。后来，另一个剧组在上演莎翁名剧“麦克贝斯”时也运用了这一新效果，John Dennis看了之后大叫着说“这是我的雷”，言下之意就是说对方偷了他的“雷声”。 从此之后，steal one’s thunde便成了一个成语，表示抢先做了某人要做的事情，并此因此获得了成功与赞誉，比如：

I was going to introduce my talk by giving a brief history of our group but the previous speaker stole my thunder by doing just that.
