现在许多都市的职业女性很让人佩服，她们工作繁忙，只好把谈婚论嫁搁在一边。朋友们周围一定也有这样的人吧!下面的句子就谈到这样一种情况。
My old sister has to put marriage on hold because of her heavy works.
(译文：因为繁重的工作，姐不得不暂缓一下她的婚姻问题。)
在这个句子中我们看到一个片语put something on hold, 它的意思是“暂缓某事”。Hold 有支撑，维持的意思，支撑一下，等一下，不正是指“暂缓某事”吗？If something is put on hold, it is going to be done or dealt with at a later date rather than now, for example：
We’ll have to put this project on hold. We don’t have enough money for it now.
(译文：我们必须把这个计划暂缓一下。我们现在没有足够的钱。)
注意，与这个片语表达相同意思的词还有put something on ice或者 put something on backburner. 把某事放在冰上，让其暂时冷却一下，也就是让某事暂缓一下的意思了。同样，backburner意思是“不重要的”，把某事暂时放在一个不重要的位置，不正含有“让其暂缓”之意吗？
朋友们都知道，讲话和写文章一样，在一阵开场之后必须切入重点。这里的“切入重点”在英文中可以用片语cut to the chase来表达. 先看下面的例句：
You’ve told me many details of your story, but what I want to know is the final consequence, so please, cut to the chase.
(译文：你已经告诉我关于你的许多细节，但我想知道的是这最后的结果。所以请切入重点。)
片语cut to the chase的意思来源于电影。Chase 意思是“追赶”，在过去的电影里，警察追赶小偷的情节是最精彩的，人们一开始就想直接切到这些情节，所以使用cut to the chase来表达“切入重点、切入正题”的意思。To cut to the chase is to immediately start dealing with the most important part of something, for example:
Cut to the chase, we’re tired of the story already. Please tell the exciting part, George.
(译文：请切入重点，我们已经厌倦了这类故事，请讲精彩的部分，George.)
结束语：2003年全国上下SARS蔓延，本打算利用五一长假期间游览长城，这下不得不暂缓一下了(put my plan on hold)。因为假期相对比较长，实在无事可做，就从影碟出租店里租了几盘连续剧，可看了几集还没有切入正题(don’t cut to the chase)，实在令人不快。
