面对唠唠叨叨的女人，人们忍无可忍，终于有沉不住气(lose my cool)的时候。他们经常说的一句话就是：
Knock it off! You’re driving me crazy.
(译文：别说了，你快把我逼疯了。)
在这句口头禅中包括了一个片语knock it off，它已经演变为了一个固定用法，意思是“够了，别说了”，如果翻译得直接一点，可以译为“住嘴! 别吵了!” knock 本来有敲打的意思，结束敲打(off)，可能美国人认为唠叨的话就像在敲打他们一样令人难受吧，所以用这个片语来表示“停止、够了”的意思。The idiom used to tell someone to stop from talking or doing something because it is annoying you. 如果有人对你这样说，也就表示他要你“住嘴”了。For example:
A: You should’ve listened to me then. See, now you regret it. But it’s too late! If you …
B: Knock it off, you have shouted at me a whole day.

A：你那时候应该听我的。你看吧，现在你后悔了。可是已经太迟了！如果你……
B：够了，你已经对我吼了一整天了。)
听够了别人的唠叨，总是想方设法的去阻止。“阻止”的英文说法比较多，最常见的是stop doing something. But today I’ll tell you another expression—-hold back. Now, let’s take a look at the following sentence:
The villagers built banks of earth to hold back the floodwaters.
(译文：村民们筑起土坝,防止洪水泛滥。)
片语hold back 从字面上看就是“把某事或某物拉(hold)回来(back)”，所以我们译为“阻止、防止”，相当于keep back. Hold back 既可以指具体的阻止动作或行为，也可以指抽象的动作或行为，使用较为广泛。To hold someone or something back means to prevent someone or something from making progress.
再看一个例句，之前先介绍一个生词tidal wave of,意思是潮汐波的，潮汐般的。
Day after day we struggle to hold back a tidal wave of crime.
(译文：日复一日，我们尽力的阻止犯罪的蔓延。)
结束语：记得念书时，哲学教授总是告诉我们“社会总是向前发展的，谁也无法阻止历史车轮的前进(No one can hold back the wheel of history)”。听到这些话，我们总是说上一句“knock it off!”
