Experience-What Employers Look For
It’s not uncommon in America to find yourself in a job that at first doesn’t seem at all related to what you studied in college. Because colleges- especially liberal art colleges- emphasize choosing a major based on what you find interesting to study, people study subjects in college without any intention to find a career in that area after graduation. Religion majors may end up working on Wall Street with the stock market. Studio Art majors may end up as science teachers. People end up in their professions in a variety of odd ways, so many colleges now say that it’s not important what major you choose. It’s the experience you have- and not the specific degree title- that employers look for.

uncommon a.
This type of mistakes is quite uncommon.
related a.
My decision is not related to personal preference at all.
major n.
There are three English majors in our team.
a variety of 各种各样的
You can find a variety of hats in this shop.
It is the experience you have that employers look for.
A: I really didn’t expect to have this job!
B: It is the experience you have that you beat them with.

Tony: Tina, can you tell me a bit more about your education?
Tina: Certainly. I graduated from University of Maryland in 1999. I have a Professional Master’s degree in Economic Laws.
Tony: So, does that mean you can have a career as a legal consultant for a large company if you want?
Tina: I could, but somehow I end up teaching English in China. Occasionally I teach a course in law.
Tony: Do you find your education helpful for your teaching profession now?
Tina: Absolutely. The writing skills I have apply to my writing course. And the oral presentation skills that I obtained as a legal consultant are also great for teaching oral English. These skills are a must in English teaching.
