Put something on

1.to put a piece of clothing on your body.
穿上；戴上。

Example: Put your coat on before you go outside.
例句：出门前把你的外套穿上。

2.to put make-up, cream etc on your skin.

Example: It takes Julie about half an hour to put her make-up on every morning.
举例：每天早晨朱丽叶要花费半小时化妆。

3.to make a light or a piece of electrical or gas equipment start working by pressing or turning a button.
把…打开。

Example: Shall I put the kettle on?

4. to put a record, TAPE or CD into a machine and start playing it.
把…放在…上。

5.to pretend to have a certain feeling, opinion, way of speaking etc especially in order to get attention.
装出；假装；伪称有…。

Example: put on an air of innocence装出无辜的样子；put on airs摆架子

6.put on weight, to become fatter and heavier.
增加；添上。

Example: put on weight增加体重；
put on extra buses during the rush hours.高峰时刻加开公共汽车。

7.to arrange or perform a show, concert, play etc.
举行，召开；上演

Example: We’re putting on a concert to raise money for famine victims. 我们正在举行一场音乐会，为受饥饿困扰的人筹集资金。

8.to start cooking something
开始烹调

Example: Robbie will be home in ten minutes; I’d better put the potatoes on. Robbie 10分钟后回来，我要把马铃薯烧好。

9.You’re putting me on! Spoken, especially AmE used to tell someone that you think they are joking.你不是在和我开玩笑吧！美国口语，通常用于在别人告诉你某事时，你认为他是在开玩笑。

Example: “They offered me a raise at work.” “You’re putting me on!”举例：他们给我加工资了，你不是在和我开玩笑吧！
