PHOTOGRAPHS of Osama bin Laden visiting Oxford in 1971 have come to light after a Spanish woman found them in an old picture album.
One of the photographs has been published in a Spanish newspaper and shows the 14-year-old bin Laden with two of his brothers beside two glamorous Spanish girls when they all attended a language course in Oxford.
The woman to whom the photographs belong had made diary notes alongside them, describing bin Laden as a "sunny child" who had a "maternal-platonic" relationship with her friend.
She also recalled him saying his mother was a concubine and lamenting that his brothers were from different mothers.
After a 30-year interval, the woman only recognised bin Laden in her photographs when she saw a widely-publicised picture showing him on holiday with his family in the same year.
The photograph, first published in the newspaper El Correo Espanol, shows bin Laden and his brothers with the Spanish girls - who asked for their faces to be blurred. The girls are dressed in mini skirts and flared trousers and have their arms draped over the boys' shoulders.
His two older brothers were 17, while bin Laden can be seen as a gangly teenager with an open and slightly unsure smile. The photograph was taken in an Oxford park where the woman remembered going for a walk one afternoon after taking tea.
In other as yet unpublished photographs, bin Laden is shown punting a boat, while another is of the group having a picnic.
The woman said it was difficult to recall a meeting 30 years ago but in the scribbled notes she says that bin Laden was markedly different from his brothers, one of whom bought pop records and the other paid close attention to fashionable clothes.
He was "well-mannered and quite deep for his age", she said. "He told us that his mother was very beautiful and that this was why she had caught the attention of his father".
She remembered bin Laden's sadness when telling how the three brothers had different mothers and that his mother was not a "wife of the Koran" but a "concubine".
She added that bin Laden was a "tender guy" and that "he complimented my friend saying she was as beautiful as his mother. I think he needed confidantes and that is why we were fond of him".
The woman also said that the bin Laden boys were introduced to the two Spanish girls "as they came from a country where customs were more strict than those prevalent in London at the time".
"We thought they were Saudi princes. They invited us to go for a row on the Thames. We were older than them and it amused us that they wanted to pay to hire the boats," said the woman.
