China is denying a U.S. newspaper report that it banned exports of specialized minerals to Japan after the arrest of the captain of a Chinese fishing vessel near disputed islands.A story published Thursday by The New York Times says it learned from anonymous industry sources that Chinese customs officials have banned so-called rare earth minerals from being loaded aboard ships at Chinese ports.

Rare earth minerals are used in such products as computers, batteries and hybrid electric cars. China produces nearly all the world's supply of rare earths.Chen Rongkai, a spokesman for China's Commerce Ministry, denied it has imposed such a ban.
