让我们先从字面上来看一下这个成语。Alley指的是两幢建筑物之间的一条窄小的马路，blind愿意为“盲的、瞎的”。“瞎的小马路”自然说不通。原来这里用的是blind的和种不那么普通的意义，即：“一头不通的。”因此，blind alley便指那种只能进不能出的死巷、绝路，或称死胡同：

The criminal was trapped by the police in a blind alley.
罪犯被警察逼入一条死胡同。

在更多的情况下，blind alley用来比喻行不通，不会带来任何结果的方法或事情：

To their great disappointment, the scientists found that the solution to the problem they had been attempting at all these ten years turned out to be a blind alley.
使科学家们十分失望的是，十年来他们一直试图寻找解决那个问题的方法竟不奏效。

I did not adopt his idea because I was pretty sure that it was a blind alley.
