castle是古代欧洲的城堡，和任何一种建筑物一样，城堡必须在打下了坚固的地基之后，方可在地面上实实在在地建造起来。在空气中建造城堡，无疑是件完全不可能的事。因此，build castles in the air就用以表示“作一些不切合实际的空想”，或者说“白日做梦”，和我们中国人用“空中楼阁”、“海市蜃楼”来表示不可能实现，只存在于幻想中的事情的说法十分相近。这个成语中的the air间或也有人用Spain一词代替的，即build castles in Spain：
