China has reacted angrily to Japan's decision to grant visa to former Taiwanese President Li Denghui, as Kerttroy reported from Beijing the Japanese action adds new pressure to the already strained bilateral relationship. China responded immediately to Japan’s approval of a visa to Mr. Lee. Chinese vice foreign minister Wang Yi summoned the Japanese ambassador and lodged what was described as strong protest. China has described the former Taiwanese President as a separatist, and says Mr. Li's motives for travelling to Japan are political. The People Daily newspaper Saturday called Mr. Li by no means an ordinary citizen, saying he is chief representative of the force trying to win Taiwan's independence. Taiwan media by contrast hail the Japanese decision as a diplomatic victory over Beijing. Mr. Li’s to fly to Japan Sunday and spend five days there before continuing on to be the United States. China also expressed this displeasure at his being granted U.S. tourist visa so he can visit Cornell University when he went to college. --Kerttroy for VOA NEWS Beijing.
