Meanwhile China's government is reacting angrily to report that the U.S. is decided to sell those advanced weapons to Taiwan. VOA Jim Randal reports from Beijing. Speaking through an interpreter, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue says the weapons Washington has approved for sale may not be as advanced as Taiwan requested, but they still represent a major improvement in Taiwan forces and a huge interference in China's internal affairs. "The Chinese side expresses its serious concern over the reports. The Chinese government is always being opposed to the U.S. arm sales to Taiwan". Ms Zhang says Washington is breaking the promise not to increase the quantity and improve the quality of weapons it sells to Taiwan. She says the arm sales seriously undermine China's sovereignty or boost the tension across the Taiwan straight, and endanger the stability in the Asia Pacific region. China considers Taiwan to be a rebellious province and should be brought back under central government control peacefully if possible, but by force if necessary. Washington says it also wants a peaceful resolution to the dispute, but has pledged to help democratic Taiwan defend itself against the huge communist rival. ---Jim Randal. VOA news. Beijing.
