Upon its completion in 1964 at the entrance to New York Harbor, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge became the longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge span reaches 4,260 feet, 60 feet more than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge in California.
The bridge is suspended by cables from two towers which are as tall as 70-story buildings. The bridge has two roadways that allow for 12 lanes of traffic. The highest point of the roadway is 228 feet above the water.
It took five years to build the bridge at a cost of $325 million. It is named after the strait that it crosses and Giovanni da Verrazano, the first European to sail into the harbor.
