和动物有关的美语成语
今天我们讲几个和动物有关的美语成语。
• Smell a rat: feel that something is wrong. 感到有什么不对劲
你可以想象一个厨师正在做一锅汤，突然闻到耗子的味道。不消说，一定有什么不对劲了，一粒耗子屎可足以坏了一锅汤呦。比如说：
Every time this guy visits me, one of my books disappears. I don’t want to say he steals them, but I really smell a rat.
(这个人每次来我这儿的时候，我都丢一本书。虽然我不想说他偷我的书，但我确实觉得不对劲。)
• Go to the dogs: become run-down. （房子，家具）年久失修
“狗窝”总是给人破破烂烂的感觉，所以房子年久失修就变成狗窝了。不过，有些美国人爱狗如爱子，狗窝漂亮的很呢。比如在下面的对话里，谈话人就用到了这个成语：
Have you seen Carol’s house lately? I can’t believe it. She bought it last year, and it goes to the dogs now!
Well, that doesn’t surprise me at all, if you’ve seen how she treated the house.
(– 你最近见过Carol的房子吗？我真不敢相信。她去年才买的，可现在已经破的不像样了！
— 嗯，这可一点也不奇怪，要是你见过她怎么对她的房子的。）
• Fishy: strange and suspicious 奇怪，可疑
的确很难把这个词和奇怪，可疑之意联系起来，不过大概食品里最容易坏的就是鱼了吧。这个词经常出现在对话中，例如：
I heard this house is haunted, and people always see “ghosts” here.
I don’t believe in ghosts, but there must be something fishy going on.
(– 我听说这房子闹鬼，还有人在这儿见过“鬼”呢。
— 我可不信有鬼，但肯定有什么可疑的东西。）
• Take the bull by the horns: take decisive action in a difficult situation. 在困境中做出关键性决定
牛仔有时候会骑在牛背上，这既是一种游戏，也是对勇气的挑战。但是牛可不是那么容易就驯服的，它总是要挣扎一番。这时候，就要看牛仔的胆量和智慧了，能在这个时候抓住牛角，就意味把握了大局，也许这就是这个成语的来源吧。我们看一下下面的例句：
Lois decided to take the bull by the horns and asked a promotion even though it might cost his job.
(Lois终于下定决心要求晋升，就算有可能会丢掉工作。)
• Horse of a different color: quite a different matter 两回事
白马和黑马当然是两回事了。不过，美国人对马可是情有独钟。小女孩喜欢马（pony）,大人更是喜欢赌马。这也许就是为什么有很多成语和马有关吧。我们可以看看它是怎么用的：
Wow, you mean the guy who sits next to Susan is her husband? I thought they were just friends. Well, that’s a horse of a different color.
(哇，你的意思是坐在Susan旁边的那个人是她的丈夫？我还以为他们只是朋友哩。这可是两回事。)
