第四十二篇

Ross刚刚搬进新的公寓,在他还在整理房间时，有人来向他筹集100元钱以作为酬谢送给即将退休的负责物业维修的Howard。Ross觉得自己刚搬进来，他连Howard是做什么的都不知道，所以不该出这笔钱，这下可好了：

Ross: …so then President Steve told everyone that I was a cheapskate, and now the whole building hates me! A little kid spit on my knee! Y’know what I’m gonna do? I’m gonna throw a party. That’s right. For everyone in the building, and I’m gonna sit them down and explain to them, I am not a bad guy. I am not a cheap guy! I’m just a guy who-who stands up for what he believes in. A man with principles.
Chandler: (To Rachel) Sounds like a fun party.
Rachel: Look, Ross, if you want your neighbors to like you, why don’t you just pay the hundred bucks? The party’s gonna cost you way more than that.
Ross: It doesn’t matter! It’s my principles! We’re talking about my principles!
Rachel: Okay, I thought it was about your neighbors liking you.
Ross: Oh, they’ll like me once they come to my awesome PAR-TAY!

【世博视角】

结果那个来向Ross筹款的人告诉了楼里的每个人说Ross不肯出钱，这使得整幢楼里的人都很讨厌Ross，一个小孩子看到Ross还向他吐唾沫（…so then President Steve told everyone that I was a cheapskate, and now the whole building hates me! A little kid spit on my knee!）。cheapskate就是我们所说的“小气鬼”或是“铁公鸡”，比如有些人平时老是噌别人的午饭吃，自己却从不肯掏钱，久而久之，一定会有人忍不住对他说：Hey, don’t be such a cheapskate – it’s your turn to buy lunch.

Ross决定开一个派对，邀请楼里所有的人参加，借此向大家解释并证明其实他不是一个小气的人（I’m gonna throw a party. That’s right. For everyone in the building, and I’m gonna sit them down and explain to them, I am not a bad guy. I am not a cheap guy!）。举办派对我们可以说 to hold / have a party, 但在口语中老美们更加习惯说to throw a party, 如：The French club is throwing a party this Friday night. 另外在Ross的这段话里我们又看到了cheap这个词，它作形容词用，a cheap guy 就等于是a cheapskate。

Rachel 觉得如果Ross想让楼里的人喜欢他的话就干脆把那钱交了不就得了，开个派对可远不止100块钱呢(Look, Ross, if you want your neighbors to like you, why don’t you just pay the hundred bucks? The party’s gonna cost you way more than that.)。way 作为副词用，可以表示“更…”的意思，在上面的这句话中，way more than that 就相当说much more than that, 只不过用way 这个词会使句子听上去更口语化一点, 又比如：Her IQ is way above average. 除此之外，美国人还喜欢用way来表示very的意思，如：I think she’s way cool, man.

Ross之所以不肯付那100块倒不是因为钱的原因，而是因为他觉得自己不该付这钱，这是个原则问题(It doesn’t matter! It’s my principles! We’re talking about my principles!)。最后Ross自信地认为只要那些人来参加这个party, 他们肯定就会喜欢自己的(Oh, they’ll like me once they come to my awesome PAR-TAY!)。awesome也是口语中使用频率很高的一个形容词，意思就是“very good ”,相当于我们平时说的“一极棒”“很牛”，等等，如：Their last concert was really awesome.

第四十一篇

Chandler和Monica俩个好上了。为了能单独相处，他俩来到一家旅店共渡周末。进了房间后，挑剔的Monica发现一个水杯没有洗干净，于是便要求换房。来到另一间客房后，Monica又发现问题了：

Monica: We’re switching rooms again.
Chandler: What? Why?
Monica: This is a garden view room, and we paid for an ocean view room.
Hotel Clerk: Our last ocean view room was unacceptable to you.
Monica: (To Chandler) Excuse me, umm, can I talk to you over here for just a second?
Chandler: Uh-huh. (He doesn’t take his eyes off the TV.)
Monica: Chandler!
Chandler: Yeah.
Monica: Look, these clowns are trying to take us for a ride and I’m not gonna let ’em! And we’re not a couple of suckers!
Chandler: I hear ya, Mugsy! But look, all these rooms are fine okay? Can you just pick one so I can watch-(realizes)-have a perfect, magical weekend together with you.

【世博视角】

原来Monica他们订的是能看到海景的房间，可换过后的这间面对的却是花园，所以Monica要求换另一间能看到海景的房间，可服务生说他们已经没有海景房可换了。其实Chandler也不想再换了，他一心想看一个电视节目，这使Monica很生气，她忙把Chandler叫到一边说：Look, these clowns are trying to take us for a ride and I’m not gonna let ’em! Monica觉得服务生说没有海景房可换了是在骗他们，take sb for a ride 这个表达法的可以解释为“带某人兜风”或者“载某人一段路”，如：Tony had promised to take me for a ride in his truck. 免费坐车兜风那当然好，可要是的士司机带你兜风那可就不好玩了，所以在口语中take sb for a ride还有一个意思就是“宰某人 ”例如：

After the deal was signed, I felt like I’d been taken for a ride.
I’d already given him ￡50 when I realized he was taking me for a ride.

Monica才没那么好打发呢，她接着对Chandler说：And we’re not a couple of suckers! 生活中总有些人的耳朵根特别软，很轻易地就会相信别人或是被别人说服，这种人就是Monica所说的sucker, 又比如：I know I’m a sucker. I’ll give $10 to anyone who tells me they’re hungry or wants a cup of coffee.

Ross快结婚了，他选择了Joey作为他的伴郎，并把结婚戒指交给了他。可谁知后来那只戒指不见了，原来是给Joey养的一只宠物给吞下肚了。虽然最后戒指找到了，但Joey还是觉得很愧疚：

Joey: Oh hey, listen Ross, thanks for being so cool about this.
Ross: No, that’s all right.
Joey: No, it’s not. I mean you-you made me your best man and I totally let you down!
Chandler: Hey, come on, it’s not your fault.
Joey: Yeah, it is! You wouldn’t have lost the ring, right? Y’know what, Ross you were right from the start, he should be your best man.
Chandler: No, you should.
Joey: Now, don’t argue with me…
Ross: Hey! Hey! Hey! I get to choose my best man, and I want both you guys.
Chandler: Really?
Joey: Really?
Ross: Hey, both you guys should be up there with me.

【世博视角】

说到结婚，我们还是先来看一些和结婚有关的词。在婚礼（the wedding ceremony）上, 最引人注目的就是新娘(bride)和新郎(groom)了，然后还会有伴娘（maid of honor）和伴郎(best man)。一般来说，伴娘和伴郎只有一个，可是在有些婚礼上，我们会看到新娘和新郎身旁站着好几位伴娘和伴郎，其中主要的那位就是maid of honor和best man，而其它的几位就被称为 bridesmaid和groomsman。在结婚的前几天，新娘和新郎会把结婚戒指（the wedding ring）交给他们各自的maid of honor和best man来保管。

Joey就是Ross的best man, 可他却没保管好那只结婚戒指，因此他觉得自已辜负了Ross (I mean you-you made me your best man and I totally let you down!) “使某人失望”或 “辜负了某人”，我们可以说 to disappoint somebody, 但在口语中有一个更加简单的表达法，那就是let somebody down, 又比如：The worst feeling is having let our fans down.作为副词，down本身就可以解释为 “情绪低落、沮丧”，如：He’s been feeling down lately.

Ross不是不明白事理的人，他知道其实发生这种事不应该怪Joey, 所以他并没有责怪Joey，这也使得Joey很是感激（thanks for being so cool about this.）但他觉得Ross还是应该像先前决定的那样让Chandler来做Ross的best man (Ross you were right from the start, he should be your best man), 结果他和Chandler都成了Ross 的best man,Ross还是信任地将戒指交给了Joey。
