Clean Your Plate

When people go out to eat in an American restaurant, each person orders his or her own dish. The portions are often so large that one person could NEVER eat everything that is set down in front of them! However, two people rarely “split” a meal- it’s considered rude if a group orders less than one dish per person unless they are elderly or have small children in the group. Since everyone is given too much food to eat on their plates, you can’t rely on a friend to help you eat yours…but, you can’t leave a lot of food on your plate- that would be wasteful. The problem is that Americans are taught from a young age to “clean their plates” and not waste good food. So what do Americans do with all the left-over food? They ask for a “doggy bag” or take-home box to package the left-over food in, and they take it home for another meal or midnight snack.

Career Hopping- It’s Fun!

Many people are comfortable “hopping” from one job to another in America. Why? People become bored after a long period of time working in one profession. Thirty years of doing the same things over and over again can seem extremely boring to many people in America. When you decide to change directions professionally, you say you are ready for “a career change.” Some people undergo several career changes over the course of their lives.
