世博英语脱口秀【36】A Nation of Busy-Bodies 忙碌的国家

美语朗读
精彩讲解

People these days, especially those living in large cities, seem to pack their schedules from morning until night. They are busy with their professional and personal lives. They must pick up the dry-cleaning, the kids, the groceries. They must meet with clients, with their children’s teachers, with friends… With a zillion things to fit in one’s day, it becomes important to make appointments to schedule in specific times to do things. Oftentimes, people will carry around an appointment book. This is a place where one can write down appointments one makes so that one doesn’t forget agreeing to do something or be somewhere!

Tina: Why do I often feel there’s not enough time to finish things every day?
Tony: The point is, are you happy about your work?
Tina: Well, I don’t even have time to think about it. In other words, I don’t know if I am happy about my job or not.
Tony: In that case, I would say you are under stress. And maybe it’s caused by inadequate planning.

世博英语脱口秀【34】环境问题会阻碍美国经济的发展吗?

美语朗读
精彩讲解

Can the Environment Compete With America’s Economy?

Scientists have been saying for decades that humans need to pay more attention to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions they create. Many countries have begun taking responsibility for their CO2 emissions lately. Japan and many European nations have decided to make a pact with each other that in the next few years they will reduce the amount of CO2 their country’s people create. But which country refused to sign the pact, called the Kyoto Protocol? This is a country that has become accustomed to “living large.” People’s cars and refrigerators and computers among many other factors, make the United States the world’s largest CO2 producer. The economy of America depends on the over-consumption of the world’s resources. Can the environment compete with the economy?
