Monica: Can you believe it? …Y’know what? I just don’t feel the thing. I mean, they feel the thing, I don’t feel the thing.
Paula: Honey.. you should always feel the thing. Listen, if that’s how you feel about the guy, Monica, dump him!

莫尼卡：你能相信吗？知道吗？我就是没那种感觉，我的意思是他们都很有感觉，而我没有。
波拉：亲爱的，你应该总感觉到那“东西”。听着，莫尼卡，如果你真对那人没感觉的话，甩了他。

【世博视角】

前几天我们刚说到过和thing有关的短语，还记得吗？如果你have a thing for sb,就表示你对某个人有“意思”，在今天的对话中Monica所说的这个the thing也差不多是这个意思，只不过thing前面用了定冠词the,更加特指男女间的那种“感觉”,也叫chemistry，一种来电的感觉。两个人如果在一起没啥感觉的话，还不如早点分手，省得浪费时间，所以Paula就劝Monica把那个人给甩了 “dump him”。dump 这个词本来是指丢弃那些不要的东西，或是倾倒垃圾，所以可想而知一个“人”要是被dump了的话,那会感觉多糟糕，比如:

Brady is really upset because his girlfriend’s just dumped him.

另外，Monica在开始讲她的事情之前，说了句 You know what? 这也是口语中经常出现的句子，听上去是问句，但通常你不必回答，只需听对方接着往下讲就是了，当然为了表现你的关注，你也可以回问“What?” 譬如一对男女正在约会，男的在那儿滔滔不绝，可女的实在觉得没意思就想开溜，她就说：

Rachel: You know what?
Carl: What?
Rachel: I forgot… I am supposed to pick up a friend at the airport. I am so sorry! I-I-I gotta go. I’m sorry.

Monica: Ross, could you come and help me with the spaghetti, please?
Ross: Yeah.
Mrs. Geller: Oh, we’re having spaghetti! That’s…. easy.
Monica: I know this is going to sound unbelievably selfish on my part, but, were you planning on bringing up the whole baby/lesbian thing? Because I think it might take some of the heat off me.

莫尼卡：罗斯，你能不能过来帮我弄一下意大利面？
罗斯：好的。
盖勒太太：噢，我们吃意大利面条啊，那个…好做。
莫尼卡：我知道这听起来很自私，但你打不打算提你那档子生小孩和同性恋的事情啊？这样可能就会让我的日子好过一点。

【世博视角】

Spaghetti（意大利面）既好吃又比较容易做，所以经常出现在老外的餐桌上, 可Monica的妈妈觉得女儿用这个来招待她有点怠慢，于是Monica就想让哥哥Ross说点别的事情以便 take some of the heat off her.

Heat这个词的本意相信大家都知道是“热度”，有一个习惯用语就是 “if you can’t stand/take the heat, get out of the kitchen”,字面上理解为“如果你忍受不了厨房里的热度就出去”，其实heat在这里就引申为“压力”或“困难”, 又比如：

Heat from the press forced the senator to resign.
来自新闻界的压力迫使参议员辞职了。

参议员辞职以后，你们就不要再给他施加压力了：

Don’t put any more heat on him.

我们都知道warming-up exercise是“热身练习”的意思，而heat因为更“热”一些，所以通常指比赛，如：trial/preliminary heats预赛。想像一下，讨论的时候大家争先发言，比赛嗓门的气氛，就不难理解这种讨论为什么叫a heated discussion了。

Rachel: And then I got really freaked out, and that’s when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head.
瑞珍：然后我就要发疯似的，这个时候一个念头一闪：巴利多像呆子先生啊！

【世博视角】

freak指疯子, 例如, My roommate is a freak.我的同屋是个疯子，当然这个地方常常是说行为有点怪异，甚至怪得有点可爱，而不完全是指失去理智的人。freak out 是指发疯，常用的相近意义的词组还有drive someone crazy，drive someone banana或drive someone nuts. 而Rachel说I got really freaked out是指恐惧结婚而变得有点发疯的样子，有时候这个词组也可以用来表示“害怕”（get scared）“气疯了”(become angry)“失去理智了”(lose control of oneself)等意思。再看下面一句：

I freaked out when I discovered that there was only ten minutes left to catch my train.
发现还有十分钟的时间赶火车，我急疯了。
